Test Drove a C32 AMG

I found an '02 C32 AMG with 48,000 miles, and decided to go take a look at it this morning. Here's my Chad style review

Exterior - 8/10
-The AMG package is what really makes this car stand out. The split 5 spoke wheels, the front fascia with a small lip, the dual tip exhaust with AMG engravings, and especially the brakes. Huge, cross drilled, and with silver AMG calipers. Quite a pleasing car to look at. Subtle uses of chrome on the bumpers look really nice. The white paint looks great, it accentuates the body lines, and the AMG blue tint windows really look sharp.

Interior - 8/10
-It definitely has a sporty feeling inside. The shifter setup is nice, just park, reverse, neutral, and drive. It also has a tiptronic like mode, which on this car is different that most others. I'll get into that later. The ergonomics are great, and well thought out. Instead of having the seat controls on the side of the seat, they are on the side of the door, which I found to be very convenient. The tilt/telescope controls were there too. The gauges soewhat remind me of an early 90s Chevy Blazer, but I like them. Look better in person than in a picture. The center console splits into 2 compartments, there is another compartment in front of the shifter, and a space in between the HCAV and radio controls. Even the cupholder is kinda neat, you press a button and it flips out all James Bond like. No wood trim on the inside, but it does have a sport looking metallic like material which actually looks great.

Seats - 8.5/10
-The seats are VERY supportive and have great side bolstering. It makes you feel like you're a part of the seat, rather than sitting on a seat. The AMG inserts add a nice touch. Pretty comfortable too, though not as relaxing and soft as the seats in our Escalade. Then again, this car isn't meant to be too relaxing and soft.

Engine - 10/10
This
car
is
fast.
A supercharged 3.2L V6 cranking out 349hp and 332 lb/ft tq. 0-60 in 4.9 seconds, and that's exactly what it felt like when I put my foot down. I was absolutley dumbfounded by the speed of this car. When I WOT in my car I get a slight motion blur. In the C32, everything to the left and right is nothing but a complete blur. I've watched videos of the C32 online, but nothing compares to actually getting behind the wheel. It sounds great too. Has a very distinct prominent sound at idle, a very aggressive tone accelerating, and no supercharger whine on the inside. The engine is civil when you want it to be, and an absolute monster when you want it to be. Kudos to Mercedes on this.

Transmission - 8/10
-Would get a 9 if the tiptronic was a little better. Instead of shifting up and down like most cars, this shifts side to side. It's somewhat hard to tell what gear you're in when shifting, because the gear indicator is pretty small and on the far right side of the dash display. Other than that, it's great. Very smooth, and VERY quick shifts at WOT. I liked driving with it in D better than shifting. It always knows what gear you want, and under WOT it shifts so fast you barely even notice.

Steering - 7.5/10
-It felt a little heavy at slow speeds, but driving around normally it was really great. I never thought a C class could go so fast, and look good doing it too.

Suspension - 8.5/10
-It's a German sports sedan, so it isn't going to ride like a Cadillac. And it didn't. The suspension on this car and my Seville are a world apart. The car was completely flat through turns, and I didn't feel any wobble at all at slow speeds like I get with my car. I wish there was a twisty road near the dealer so I could really get a feel for the suspension in action.

Radio - 7.5/10
-10 speaker Bose system. Sounded very clear and crisp, but like most Bose systems, it seemed like it was lacking a little bass. I didn't turn it up much, so who knows. Maybe it does pack some balls.

Overall, I was absolutley amazed by this car. I never would have thought a C class could be capable of going so fast. They're asking $21k, but I think I can talk it down a little. They said I could only get about a $10k trade for my car, so I'm going to try and sell it privately for more.

Hmmm... good review... I might have to go take a look at one of these little beauties if I find one around here...
All you need to know about AMG is that the phonetic German pronounciation is I AM GAYY.
If you are going to buy something smallish, fast and German.... Buy an M3. They are a few bucks more than the C32, but worth every last penny.

Handling, braking, steering, etc... all heads and shoulders over that car.
I agree with what Wiseguy said.....M3. The C32 is cool and all, but the M3 looks more sharp IMO, is faster IIRC, better handling, probably earns more respect among those who know these cars more than I do. But the advantage to the C32 is the four doors, which IIRC is a big plus for you. Ever thought about an S4?
I'd love an M3, but they're just out of my price range. Performance is about on par with the C32 acceleration wise, though I'm sure the M3 can outhandle it. The cheapest one I can find under 50,000 miles near me is going for $31,000. Same with the S4, cheapest one under 50,000 miles is $28,995.

With the M3 and S4, people see it and know it's fast. The C32 is more of a sleeper.
Imagine the C55
I wouldn't go M3. It has more problems and they are expensive. At least when you are looking for an M3 in that same year range as that I AM GAY

Oh, you might be surprised.... Seller of that car is a friend of mine.

The maintinence on those MBs can be atrocious as well.. proceed with caution. And hell, CTS-Vs are buyable for well under $30k if you look and are patient.... why not go that route? Maintinence will be less, be a newer car, etc...
EXTENDED WARRANTY!!!!!!!!

Maintenance costs alone will be enough to cripple your bank account, unless your prepared to spend the costs. If your planning on having it serviced at the dealer, expect to pay 1k+ for brakes. price varies from place to place, but it's damn expensive. That cup holder will break. God help you if the dash fades (the early C-class' have a tendency to do that if it gets really hot inside a few times). Control arm bushings are pricey as well. Basically, the car is outrageously expensive to fix when it's out of warranty. Some modules can cost anywhere from 300-1k+ to replace if one fails. Tires are VERY expensive for them, and it will go through them like a hot knife through butter if you routinely drive it hard.

Basically, I'm just saying be prepared to spend the money should you need to. The local mom and pop shop isn't going to be able to work on ANY of the electronics. Basic crap like oil changes and suspension stuff you might be able to get away with going to STS or something (provided they're familiar with the differences between the 112 engine in a C320, and a C32...and I don't just mean the blower).

Personally, if I were looking for a car like that...I'd hold off another year or so until the new 204 chassis is released, and the price of the older 203's starts to fall. Then maybe you could get your hands on a C55 for a decent price.

Can't be that much more expensive than servicing a CTS-V once it runs out of warranty.
Extended warranty is definitely a must. From what the salesman told me, it's still under warranty until 50,000 miles, then I can get an extended warranty through Mercedes up to 100,000 miles.

Is it like the BMW warranty where you have to pay a $50 handling charge per visit? I hope not.

A friend of mine has the S4 with a downpipe and hp exhaust and I really like it. It sounds mean and makes a great sleeper car. Pricey though.

Keep in mind that a StarMark warranty doesn't cover interior components. They're real nit picky about what's covered and what's not. It's not a full bumper-to-bumper warranty as they might have out believe.
Gary, a while ago I gave thought to getting a W-140 S Class. The maintenance/repair costs turned me off of that car though, atleast for the time being.

My parents have the extended warranty to 100K miles on their 760Li and they don't pay a $50 charge per visit...

Chad. Ever see "Spinal Tap"?.

OK... Maintinence on your DeVille is, say, a 3.

The W140s go to 11. Go search on putting AC Evaporators in those frightpigs! 26 hour job

Good analogy!

Documentary Guy:"why don't you just make 10 a little louder and make 10 be the top number?"
Bassist: Pause...."these go to eleven"
