My XT5 is only a year and a half old and the sun shade on the passenger side it’s coming apart already. The dealer says I’m gonna have to get a new one and does not know when it will come in. I open and close maybe once a week.

My sunshade will not close if the sunroof is open. However, it the sunshade is closed, and I press and release the sunroof button to vent, the sunroof will open and the sunshade will open a couple inches. I would think there would be turbulence stressing the sunshade if driven in this manner. Has that ever happened to you?

Good news is the dealer is going to replace yours, but it is best to avoid damage in the future.

I have never had that happen. I always open and close my sunshade when the sun roof is closed so I don’t know why it’s falling apart. Looks like the material is just glued on.

We'd all like for things to work perfectly and not go wrong but reality is there are manufacturing/installation defects in any manufactured product - it's a role of the dice if you happen to get 'that' one that has it. Perhaps there's the blue moon car owner who has had nothing go wrong, but I think most of us have had to have something replaced/fixed under warranty.

Are you talking sunshade as part of the sunroof, the headliner, or the sunvisor which flips down?

The sunroof sunshade should not contain glue, I thought it was a finished fabric.

Pics would be appreciated.

Not surprising... both our XT5 and CT6 have had the shades replaced under warranty. It looks like the sunshade is going to be the constant headache on today's cars that GM power windows were on the 90s/2000s models.

Not a lot of owners on here reporting problems that I recall (though I haven't done a thorough search). I had mine replaced over two years ago on my XTS and so far (knock on wood) so good...I use it numerous times in the week.

Go over to the SRX forum and you'll read the same thing. Many issues with the sunroof shade. Looks like a cheap GM part to me.
Problems with sunshades are not limited to GM. To cite some of many examples, see links below. So I guess they all have cheap parts, but more likely it's just the nature of the beast...just saying.

The design is limited by the area that needs to be covered and the limited space to retract. When sunroofs were only over the front seats, the shade could be substantial material that did not need to roll up into the remaining roof area.

Very well put Excalibur, I get tired of people running down certain brands with a no research behind them. All car makes have issues if they didn't dealers/manufacturers wouldn't have repair shops. Thanks for the links.

Personally, I hate sunroof. Seems that without fail, they will fail, leak or break sooner or later.
That applies to anything...if it's mechanical sooner or later it will need a repair. I think a lot of owners don't carry out proper maintenance on the sunroof and so it fails more soon.
Sunroofs - some hate 'em, some love 'em.
