I just bought a 2000 DeVille with 85000 miles on it. After putting about 300 miles on it over ther last week or so, while driving locally, the steering wheel suddenly stiffened while making a turn. After fighting the wheel & completing the turn, I noticed that the steering became easier - almost normal while accelerating but the steering became more & more difficult as less gas is given.
Is this a symptom of the PS pump on it's way out? Or is the rack & pinion having a problem??

Before we start looking at the pump... Have you checked fluid level, belt tension, idle speed and front tire pressure?

I'd start with the belt tensioner from those symptoms.

After checking fluid level, belt tension, etc., it turned out to be the pump itself. A local guy replaced it for $240. Did he hose me or is that a reasonable price? :hmm:
