Stupid HVAC Tricks

1766 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  300:29:1
I have a 2014 Lux and the HVAC system is driving me crazy (pun intended).

The manual states:

"AC Mode (Air Conditioning):
Press the AC Mode touch screen
control to turn the automatic air
conditioning on or off. If the fan is
turned off or the outside
temperature falls below freezing, the
air conditioner will not run."

Ok, this is good, however the reverse is also true, if the fan is turned back on say to get MORE HEAT in the vehicle, the AC will TURN BACK ON!

I keep playing this game of adjusting the temperature and then having to manually turn the AC mode OFF!!! If it's 40-50 degrees, I don't want the AC on unless I want to eliminate condensation which we rarely get here in FL when it's cold because I vent outside air which has LOW humidity.

Is there another trick I'm missing or am I just stuck in On/Off hell?

...Press the AC Mode touch screen control to turn the automatic air conditioning on or off....
The key word here is 'automatic'. The system monitors the environment and turns the A/C compressor on/off as needed. This has been pretty much standard in all vehicles I've owned with 'automatic climate control'. If you turn it off it will not turn on (the compressor) in any conditions.
Unless you restart the truck or press auto again..
Right, I understand how automatic works, but I don't want automatic climate control. I want MANUAL. I just want air out the vents at the temperature I want without any compressor or A/C on.

Turn A/C off
Turn Auto off
System is now manual

The "A/C" will cycle on at times to assist with defrosting. This is done automatically. There's really no reason to manually turn off the A/C, imo, unless you want to conserve fuel and only use the fan in warm weather or at night under similar condtions. I will manually redirect air flow at times, instead of using the auto setting, but auto works well most of the time. Don't get hung up on the A/C light being on. It's not an indicator that the air conditioner is running full time, especially in cold temps.
And the fuel difference with the compressor on and off is so minute with today's new systems, that it isn't worth it to turn the compressor off.
My car runs much smoother when my Air Con is off.

I get manual mode; Why can't I turn up the Fan speed in manual mode without it turning on the Air Con??????

Good question. I've not experienced this myself but then I generally prefer the 'set it and forget it' setting.

I think that the consensus here is, when the AC light is on it doesn't mean that much. The actual cycling of the compressor will happen based on conditions etc. I have learned to ignore the light for the most part.
