when my sts is at idle, the noise coming from the engine sounds like a diesel

not so much apparent when the car is moving

a real low ratcheting noise sort of

hard to describe

pretty similar to this youtube video's noise:

there is a lot of movement on the belts that spin on the master cylinder? whatever those are that are on the left side of the block

like, the whole mechanism/pulley/belt assembly is going left right left right

possibly causing it? i dunno, they've had that much movement since i got the car, about 6 months ago. maybe something finally came loose?

One of the bearings is going. Most likely the belt tensioner or the idler.

Best bet would be to replace all those parts while you/they are in there since they aren't that expensive, along with the belt.

turns out it was the tensioner & pulley (at first)

they replaced

no difference in sound

i told them, they tried again

replaced alternator

a little bit better but i can see the harmonic balancer is shaking left to right

$700 later, i'm depressed

oh well

sigh. 3rd time around. they finally suggest the harmonic balancer. and they're actually trying to charge me for it. PLUS THE TENSIONER AND PULLEY. WHAT THE ****. $650

i said it took 3 tries, and three parts later, to figure out the true problem as to why these bearings keep coming loose? and you're going to continue charging me? when i suggested that as a cause to begin with?

the guy is like yeah well uhh i don't know the situation very well, you'll have to speak to the service manager

i replied with an okay

"the service manager isn't here"

LOL

what the ****

well, after a lot of arguing, i got them to budge.

only paid for parts on the pulley & harmonic balancer. $250 bucks instead of the $600+

noise is gone completely.. what i'm worried about now is, at idle, a bit of vibration and an odd low rumble that accompanies it, like there is a load on the engine

what are the symptoms of the main bearings wearing down? could a wobbly harmonic balancer cause this to happen?

also,

had this fault code in history after getting the car back:

P1110 Atmospheric Pressure Sensor Low Input

could this get set off by the techs ?

Next time you take it in for work bring a handful of hundred dollar bills and a big jar of Vaseline. You'll be surrounded by friendly folks in no time.
