There really is no average, usually at around 75K or so it's fairly safe to assume a standard damper is at the end of its useful life. Age is a factor as well. 10K is nothing. What brand were they?
It takes 10,000 miles to break the struts in. It would be normal to have them soften up by now.
Sticktion should be gone in a few hundred miles. Not 10K.
I find strut life to be more of a factor of age rather than mileage. Seems that they leak around maybe 8-12 years, whether there's 30k or 150k on them.

whats the average strut life
that depends on the type of driving you do - and age -

lots of smooth highway driving -
the struts will last longer -

rough bumpy roads will shorten the life -

environment also plays a role -
driving with salt/sand/dust on the road -
will shorten the life -

with that said -
struts with 75,000+ miles - or 10 years old -
are probably due for replacement -

struts that have failed in 10,000 miles are defective -
or were el-cheapos - and are worn out -

what brand are they?
