Two weeks ago a purchased a 1993 Sedan Deville. This car replaces my ailing '91 Chevy Caprice ex FBI cruiser. Last week the hood ornaments were broken off of both the Caddy and the Chevy. I am currently living in an apartment complex that has a lot of delinquents living with their delinquent parents. Even if I caught the SOB that did this I am sure the kids parents would just think it was funny and be proud that their kid is following in their own footsteps.

I have considered isolating the new hood ornament and attaching it to an electric fence charger or maybe even a stun gun. Or sharpening the bottom of the wreath with a dremel tool. Of course these options also leave me wide open for civil litagation ( which is kind of screwed up since no one would get hurt unless they were committing a crime) but since our legal system doesnt really do much to protect the innocent, these are not reasonably options.

Does anyone have and helpful thoughts or suggestions about what can be done to prevent this from happening again?

I have mine wired to my horn. Got the car that way. The ornament goes through the hood, then through a large spring. A hole was cut in the plastic that goes accross the front of the car from the left and right head lamps to give room for the spring when you close the hood.
Two wires..One on the top of the spring connected to your battery (Positive terminal), And the bottom wire connected to your horn. Two little connectors on each wire lined up so that when someone pulls up on the ornament they make contact and the horn blows. Dont forget to add a fuse along the line so as to not fry your horn.
LOL.

I disconnected this when I got my car. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was supposed to do.

The wires were sloppily installed so I removed them.

Guess I'll be re-running them this weekend.

Yes it is very frustrating. After the first time, I used something called "liquid steel" instead of using the original pull release / bend spring, and permanently attached that baby to the hood. Unfortunately Cadillac uses something like pot metal, which I am very dissapointed in Cadillac for not fore-seeing this problem, and making them stronger. I ran into the ornament myself by accident and assessed by the bruises on my hand that is was not quite sturdy. But this 2nd time, the perpetrator obviously had to twist the bend it at the stem to get it off...hence the base of the ornament is still attached to my car...LOL so, this next time, I plan to find me a hollow steel or iron rod, just wide enough to slip the stem of the ornament into...and "liquid steel" it to the inside...then use a heavy duty cross bolt underneath the hood. They only thing they'll be able to do is damage the reef and probably cut up thier hands while doing so..and with a little touch up paint the rod will be a shiny chrome color. A Cadillac just seems to loose some of it's "class" without the ornament, besides, it makes a great groundhog bullseye.. (just kidding) The horn idea sounded great except, one problem. When some dweeb tried to steal my car last year, the horn being a part of the factory installed alarm system went off, but wasn't loud enough for me to hear clear inside my home, and most people just ignore alarms these days, too many go off all the time. Thank goodness it has that starter disengage system, or I would be out a whole car by now, I did have to replace the window though. <sigh> People these days are just jealous and disrespectful...so I am going forward with my new idea here, thankfully hood ornaments are cheap on E-Bay! LOL But I really think this will work this time. Great ideas about the shock tactic and the sharp edges, I thought of those too, but everybody is so "sue" happy, I figure best not. Maybe someday Cadillac will coem up with a universal all purpose super strong ornament replacement. btw: I saw the new removeable ones that came out in the 90's, but who wants to have to bother with that, about as time consuming as the pull out radios.. no thanks. Keep up the good ideas!!

Id like to say that I never had any problems like this with my 68 Caddy. but that V shape is just too much to pass up to most theifs. I ended up chopping up the underside of the hood and welding the damn thing right on. but even then several individuals attempted to pry it of with a screw driver. so minor body work around the caddy symbols were a weekly event in my life.
im gone.

Just yesterday my friend broke my hood orniment off. It was broken when I got the car, so I just drilled a 1/8" rod up into the orniment and down into the base, then JB welded it. But that didn't work out too well. He said he'd tack weld it on for me, so I guess thats ok.

And a month or 2 ago I think someone tried to break into my trunk and steal my subs, and I guess they didn't realise the crest slides over to reveal the key hole, so they bent out the crest. Morons..

On my old 88' , I have my hood onrament wired to my horn as well. I never had it stolend after I did that .
Has worked here too. Thats why I posted.
Sure its wired to the horn but its not like an anti theft horn.
The anti-theft horn ............honks...............then honks............then honks.......
With this wired directly to the horn, as long as its being pulled then it hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooks.
Gotta figure too. There is a difference between stealing the car and the hood ornament!
Kids looking for a cool belt buckle or mantle piece (Whats that to you 60$) will bolt when there is something that will draw attention to themselves.
Some one wanting your vehicle that will actually put $$$$ in their pocket (Whats that at least 10-30 thou) will drive away with the horn going and thendisable it later.

Talkin hood ornaments here not the actuall vehicle !
You dont want to be welding cause that will only cause rust in the long run. And if you make it attached to firmly then that can cause damage in the long run too. Yanking and pulling will bow your hood !

Lets be serious here. If they want your car they will take your car. If they want your hood ornament they will take your hood ornament. But the chances are that if an alarm goes.............the car thief will continue. But the ornament thief will run like hell.
Kids will be kids, and car thieves will steal your car.

Murphy, took the words right out of my mouth. Pretty much verbaitum, lol.

But the horn idea is your best bet. When I was in High School one the teachers parked his 89 Deville behind our shop class. One day one of the kids tried to jack the emblem. When the horn went off he ran like hell. That teachers room was right next to the outer door. So when he heard it he came running out side. For the next week we used to bump the emblem as we walked by just to watch him come running out side  . It was good fun. But, if you have a hard time hearing it in your house go to your local parts store and pick up a "D" tone horn and wire it in with your stock horns. That should give off enough of a blast for you to hear it. And, hopefully, deafen the SOB that's trying to jack your emblem :D
