Being very disappointed in the "DSP Bose" system, I set out to upgrade & went very simple.

Doors: replaced 5.5" with Infinity 6002i 6.5" in all four doors.
Sub: Sony XPlod 760w amp to a 10" boxed enclosure in trunk, feed off factory sub leads.

Result: awesome.

For so little $ & time the result is so good, I can really turn up the mids now & the sound is very crisp, you really can't believe the doors are still running thru the factory amp. The bass can be overwhelming if desired & very very clean. The Infinities have directional tweeters too so the hi's also are kicking crisp.

I couldn't be happier for the $ & for 3 hrs effort.

I'm on a roll with the mods;

V1 hard wired into the dome lighting
carbon fiber interior kit installed
Stereo now boomin
Caliper Lacquer do in this week
& shoppin for the right wheels
- hmm, exhaust, hmm ...

MORE INFO PLEASE!!!!!!!!! pics? This sounds like a great mod and I've grown tired of the stock set-up.

I never thought of just replacing the front speakers. Also very interesting is the rear subwoofer. I've wanted to add a subwoofer for sometime but I don't want to sacrafice a lot of trunk space. Someone on a local shop told me he could build a box and hang it from the rear deck.

I'd like to know how you have a 4 ohm speaker working on the Bose amp that is rated to drive a 1 ohm factory speaker. You "should" have lost a lot of volume in replacing those speakers. The 6 1/2"s should have fit without many mods but the factory 1 ohm speakers have me a bit mystified :hmm:

More info:

I'm in Ellicott City, MD, anyone local who wants to check the sound for research on a mod like this is welcome .. burgers on you. :)

No problem on speaker fitment, cake walk.

Ohm: I have an '03 MDX with Bose & built off the research on that stereo upgrade for this simple one. The Ohm at the factory speaker I found to be around 2.2 ohm, maybe this is off if you say 1, but 2 is what I based this on. So as in my MDX Blows, uh I mean Bose, going from a 2 ohm to 4 ohm @ same efficiency would be about 3db difference, not much at all. Most sales folks will work the ohm thing to death to get a customer into a head unit or amp, & they're not wrong, just maybe over emphasizing the need IMHO based on 3 systems I've now using factory heads & factory front amps. With the gained clarity you don't need as much volume either so the 3 db given up is over shadowed by less volume needed with clear sound. I'm no audio guy & I may be off on this, but the results are compelling. Trust me, the system sounds great & I'm a picky biatch. Just as nice as the MDX upgrade I did.

For a whopping $150 in speakers (all four), you can't beat it.

Sub: amp installed on back of seat, box is removable, factory sub is still there, I'm toying with removing but it & planned to, but the system sounds great now so I don't NEED to do it .. so not sure if I will or not.

Pics: Yep, I have a digital camera so I need to pop some shots & post.

You gotta let me know how that sounds when its done (and pics)! I've been looking at replacing the speakers and adding subs and a clean sweep for a while, just waiting for my budget to catch up with my desires. Where are you having this done? I think Ovation is the only place around here that carries JL Audio around here. I sent you a pm about another mod in another thread, be sure to let me know what you think!

Just for reference 3dB is a huge loss. Sound levels are logrithmic. A 3dB gain is a doubling in sound levels. Conversly a 3dB loss is half the sound. Where you're new speakers shine is in their sensitivity. A speaker with a 92dB sensitivity will be twice as loud with the same input as one with 89 dB sensitivity. I'm sure the stockers are even less than that.

More than likely, any loss in the amplified signal by the impedance doubling was more than made up by the Infinity's greater sensitivity. Even though the stockers are Bose, I'm sure there nowhere near the quality of stuff you can buy aftermarket. My Jeep had the 'Infinity' sound system. I pulled those speakers, and while they were made by Infinity, they had paper cones, and tiny folded steel magnets. Total POS.

Daffy,

I've been waiting to hear from somebody who replaced only the speakers. I already replaced my sub, but the factory speakers seem to suck. Glad to hear you're happy with the sound.

But... where did you find that speaker at that price? $150 for all four? On the web, they seem to be going for $79 - $99 for one speaker. Can anyone get the deal you got?

simplycheap.com has them for $55 a pair. http://simplycheap.com/infi6002i.html

O, that's kind of what I meant, the 3db dif isn't as material in context to the efficiency & clarity - but I barely know what I'm talking about, your explanation is much nicer.

I can't recall the specific reason but these speakers were the prefered set for matching to the Bose in the MDX. I figured trying a pair to compare to stock was a fairly low $ risk, and they sounded 10x's better.

The sound from this setup will deafen you, there's no lack of volume for sure, with the doors open & this stereo sounds as great 30 ft away as it does in the car going down the road.

Daffy,

I'm :hmm: ..... did you replace just the speakers and spend only $150 to get this great upgraded sound? If yes, price is a No-brainer

Because you also wrote:

this is where the Sicilian in me comes out. You know, the part of me that's not very bright.

Yo Vin,

Ha, couldn't resist.

Sorry for confusion. The speakers & install of the speakers set me back $150, so 4 Infinity's, & like 40 mins labor @ circuit city. OK, OK, I know you're gonna say circuit city install, WTF? But, the CC here has been great for me, I can take my stuff in & go over it with them, & they let me be right there with them while they work it, it's like having experienced audio labor I can supervise & they're really cheap.

The sub/amp, I took that setup right out of my MDX & put the stock setup back in there as I'm now selling the MDX. So, the Amp & Sub were already prepped, install kit etc, that was a piece of cake too. I did have them run the hot wire & ground for me for the amp & they went over the setup to double check everything.

They too were amazed at the difference for so little effort. They were also drooling all over the V, 2 guys new what it was immediately & "called dibs" on working on it. I got the Amp & Sub/box combo 3 yrs ago, can't remember price but it was at a sale at Best Buy.

I bought two pairs of these for $29.99 each pair ($59.98 total for four speakers) on eBay last night. Buy it Now, no bidding. These are discontinued, so you have to buy where/while you can.

I hate the Bose mid-range and sub. So I'm thrilled to try these ($60, how can I go wrong?).

Next up, the new Infinity Bass Cube, and I'm done.
