Hello, first timer. Have '97 Cadillac DeVille with 80,364 miles. Taking oil consumption test and dipstick currently indicating one section above add. Have used premium fuel until recently when on advice of experienced service tech, changed to mid-grade. Believe that premium may have been causing carbon buildup in piston rings causing them to stick and using more oil than it should. With mid-grade carbon buildup could be dissipating due to a faster burning fuel than premium and therefore burning off that carbon. Any opinions or suggestions? Thanks very much.

how hard to you run the car ?

all northstars should be ran for a WOT run at least once a month , if its being ran to the corner store and back everyday she will build up carbon and get the rings sticky ....causeing excessive oil consumption

Put the car in 2nd , run it floored to 60 mph , then allow the engine to slow the car back down to 25 , do this 3 times , once a month , that should exercise the rings and keep the carbon sticking at a minium

a very typical problem for the northstar
