Stability Reduced?

I have a '97 STS. Occasionally there appears a message on the cluster:
STABILITY REDUCED
This is accompanied by the TRACTION CONTROL and ABS lights coming on.
The only thing I can find on this in the manual says to shut off the engine and restart. When I do, these lights and message go away. This has happened only 3 or 4 times in the past 4 months. I cannot detect any degrade in performance. Any ideas? Is this some software bug in one of the control modules? The fact that the manual just says "restart the engine" leads me to believe this is a KNOWN software or sensor bug in this model.

Never heard of a "software bug" that would produce those symptoms. I would pull the codes and report back with what they are. There's likely a sensor malfunctioning somewhere.
Pull the codes on your car. That message may indicate an intermittent ABS or other problem. If there is an ABS problem, the traction control doesn't work properly and you get that warning. I believe there may be other things that will cause it as well. The codes should lead you to the answer.

OK. Finally got the codes from the car. Any clue how to reset?

This is what it told me:

What does these mean?

c1243, ABS pump motor stalled. This means the motor was not running when the EBCM asked it to. Someone else mentioned activating the ABS/TCS to try clearing this up. I think that is a good idea. Brake hard and launch hard to engage the pump motor if it will. That might help keep the brushes and bearings freed up. Otherwise it's time for a new BPMV (hydraulic unit).

Good info. Thanks. The looking up that code it mentions something like BPVM Pump.

I understand "brake hard", I am assuming "launch hard" means rapid acceleration?

Well that seemed to do the trick. I had cleared all the codes. I tried a hard brake and nothing. I then did a "hard launch". When I did this the ABS and Traction Control lights came on. I stopped and restarted the car and have NOT seen this message since. Thanks!
