Hi guys
I bought a CPO 2013 Cts Wagon with 56k miles. Got a full inspection done from another dealership and car checked out Ok. Brought it home. Since then I’ve had 2 sets of bearings replaced (one under warranty) and during both those times the stabilitrak came on and it was the bearings both times. A few days ago I was driving and the stabilitrak light came on and then went away after 30 seconds. I though here goes another bearing. But 2 days ago the stabilitrak light came on and the same time the cel light flashed for 2 minutes but then went out. What could this be now? I’m completely underwhelmed by the quality of this vehicle. My past vehicle a Subaru Impreza (wrx) was solid and no surprises. The bearings never went out till 130k miles and not even the damn timing belt. Can you guys advise what it could be? I have 75k on the clock as of now. Thanks!

The tone ring that the speed sensor depends on is on the back of the hub is exposed to the elements and eventually deteriorates. The hubs themselves aren't the problem, just the design of the speed sensor and tone ring. Common problem on these cars though. Were they at least covered under the CPO warranty? They can be a pain to replace.

Anyway, you'd need to get the car scanned to see if any trouble codes have been thrown. If the lights not on, there may still be a pending code there.

I have 50k on mine. Previous owner replaced all 4 hubs, he did not want to have any trouble.

Apparently part of the maintenance of this vehicle. I never had any trouble with the vehicle.

perhaps the CEL will be stored and using a proper scanner may get you more the answer to what is going on this time...

Good luck with your CTS

Thank you all so much! I did read up about how the hearing assembly is designed and that it’s the ring that breaks down before the actual bearings. I’ve had 3 replaced so far. I just hope that the CEL isn’t due to a misfire or anything of that sort. I’ll keep you guys updated.

The stabiltrak and ABS lights are different from the check engine light. Which one(s) lit up? If it was a misfire, the engine light in lower left would light up.

With any car you can have issues... You can find Lemons in any make and model... Calling a particular model bad just because your car has a couple issues is a poor thing to do.

But also don't forget the many different flooding episodes we have had through out the country. It is hard to know if a specific vehicle might have been involved in a flood that might have permanently damaged the vehicle. This is a chance we all take with a used car... There is a reason why the last person got rid of it and we just hope it wasn't because they didn't take care of the car and just unloaded it when it started getting worn out.

Mine has just under 100k. I've replaced three hubs in the last couple of years. Two for bad bearings, one for failed tone ring. This is not a "CTS" thing, it's a sealed hub thing. We do hubs regularly at the school shop on everything from Hyundais to pickups.

You simply need to scan for codes. The car is trying to tell you what's wrong.

It may not be a CTS thing, but it is a hub design thing. If they enclosed the sensor and ring within the hub it would be better protected and last longer.

I never had to replace a wheel bearing before 45k miles like I have on this car. Presumably because none of my other cars used this design.

Certain engine faults (bad MAF for one) will disable the traction control. When my MAF was going bad, the CEL, brake light, and stability control lights would come on all at the same time. Replaced the MAF and all was cured. Like some have said, get the fault codes and go from there.

Yep. That’s what I’m going to go do today. The Stabilitrak and the CEL (Engine block flashing light) flashed again today after driving 20 miles or so. When standing at a red Light, Stabilitrak and traction off warnings came on first and I felt a slight thump from the rear and then the CEL light came on it flashed. In a minute The stabilitrak went off on its own (i.e. traction control and stabilitrak came back on) and the CeL flashed for 30 seconds longer and then went away. ??‍♂

Got a P0300 and P0304 code reading and a C0561 code as well. Could be the ignition coil or spark plugs? It’s git under 75k miles. Any ideas?
Yes, it could be coil and/or plugs (P0300, P0304).
The C0561 is related to your TC/Stabilitrak issue.
I'm not certain they are related to one another.

I just had the same symptoms on my 2013 coupe with 74,000 miles. Hit a big patch or slushy snow and the right front tone ring is what code its throwing. No other codes. I have a good scan tool.
ABS, Traction Control, Stabilitrak, and AWD are disabled from a simple right front tone ring.
I'll post what the code is later when I scan it again.
I cleared the code first time and it came right back when I tried to drive the car.

Time for a new hub assembly.
A bad tone ring will disable all of those systems on the front axle.

Without that tone ring the car has has no idea how fast that wheel is spinning, so it can't know when it need to apply the brakes for ABS/TS/stabilitrak.

Like long said, expect to replace a hub at whichever corner is throwing the code.

I've always used Timken on my GM vehicles for replacement hubs.
Should I go AC Delco or has Timken been a good bet on these cars?
Either is excellent.
I've used Timken with positive results.
