Speed limit display

After the so called "March Update", the Speed Limit was displaying the speed on almost every road, even roads in my subdivision. For the last 2-3 weeks or so, it has gone back to displaying "--" on all roads. I checked for app updates and updated about 8 "apps", including Google Maps, Waze, Google Assistant, Google Keyboard and several other "Google xxx" apps. Speed limit still displays "--", but Google Maps does now show stop signs and traffic lights.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Hmm - not sure. Maybe do the infotainment reset (hold end-call for 10 seconds).

My speed limit display is still working (knock on whatever) - both before and after the Google Maps update. Liftgate also working reliably after the full vehicle software update. Left side of the cluster also now stays on the trip screen between every power cycle - used to only last a couple days before something reset and defaulted to the initial left side screen (not trip display).

My first anomaly since the vehicle full update was yesterday, with the Service Vehicle Soon indicator on and the Li-Ion and 12V battery faults showing in the mobile app. Later today, both the icon in the car and the mobile app faults are gone again.

Perhaps some update triggered the loss of function for your speed limit, and maybe now an underlying fault. Even though OTA updates for the main modules are disabled, some things are still happening like the Android Automotive apps, SuperCruise map updates, and perhaps even the OnStar module. Wonder if something happened during one of those quiet updates.

I'm not clear where the speed limit info comes from or how it gets communicated to the instrument cluster portion of screen (via the radio). The data would seem to be coming from Google Maps, but not sure of the specifics of the hardware and software partitioning in the radio for the left/right side screen content. Maybe @ElectricAvenue could find some clues.

When my speed limit display got broken after the Android 12 release, I can say they fixed it without doing the infotainment USB update - just the radio and serial data gateway updating. Kinda surprised me - I thought the bigger USB update of the infotainment would be needed. So almost like something was in a fault state. Had this fixed a few months back before the 'March update', and it continued to work afterward as well.

I've ordered a the Topdon TopScan Pro. Will see how that lower cost tool ($100) performs versus the other tool that was mentioned on the OBDII thread. Something like this may shed light if there are hidden faults occuring that may explain some of this. Might be standard equipment to carry in the car - like the 10mm wrench for the 12V battery.

That's quite possible. I remember people saying that with no OnStar plan they could hotpot their phone to restore all of the in-car connected features, but that the speed limit didn't work however. Not sure if anyone has tried this recently to see if it is still that way - there were so many people with broken speed limit displays after the updates.

I can confirm that it's not directly linked to OnStar, may have been at one point, but as of the March update it's not dependent on any OnStar plan, or in-car data.
That's interesting because when I had the "March Update" done, the speed limit failed after the first restart. Took it back to the dealer and the tech said the telematics (OnStar) failed to authenticate with the Serial Gateway. He authenticated it and it worked fine until 2-3 weeks ago.
I'd like to see where you are getting that info because as Zymurgy stated it is still tied to the telematics module/Onstar Data in some way.

There are a few streets near me that they lowered from 30 mph to 25 mph. (and then write tickets for 30 mph, but that's a different issue.) The speed limit sign in the car is still at 30 mph. When I drive by the signs they do not change the car display. My Landrover Discovery Sport would change when driving past signs.

Update to my Speed Limit issue:

It started working again today just as mysteriously as it stopped working some 3-4 weeks ago. Nothing I tried resolved the issue. Then today, going to a financial advisor it didn't work. On my return it worked.

I have an XT4 with the same display and problem. Go to your settings, apps, scroll down to google maps, clear cache, force stop. That worked for me. Backed out of my garage and all was working. Who knows for how long. I read this fix on another GM forum.
I have had other issues with GM and their updates adding and removing features. My 2019 Sierra had an update just after I bought it, and I didn't know. Features that I liked and was using were no longer there. I thought I was losing it till I called GM and they said that it had been updated and I couldn't go back to a previous version. One item was now only available in Denali trim if I wanted to upgrade from my just purchased unit, LOL.

I'm thinking all these software issues are going to be figured out by phone / android specialists before GM figures them out.

My issue resolved itself. See post #34.

Circling back on this. I finally was able to spend some time messing around with the Lyriq yesterday. I messed with just about every setting, cleared all caches, set a route for navigation using Google, etc. and nothing worked. Finally, my wife, yes my wife, asked me a simple question. Doesn't this car have a refresh or reboot to the nav system? Granted I am an IT manager. With red on my face I found that if you hold down the Phone Hang-Up button on the steering wheel for 20 seconds, the system will reboot. Low and behold, that did the trick. I didn't have to do anything else. As soon as I pulled out of the driveway, the MPH for the street in front of my house popped up.

What really pisses me off about this, is I called the service advisor multiple times, and he failed to return my calls I think if my center tray ever comes in from being on backorder and gets installed. I will change dealerships. The one I am going to is where I purchased the ride and I pass two Caddy dealerships during my normal daily activities. I see no need to go out of my way for less than stellar service.

Thanks again for all of the tips I have received here from other owners.

In case you need it in the future here are the known reset procedures for the Lyriq. There may be others, and if you find any, let me know and I'll add them. Lyriq Reset Procedures

We all have had the same experience, if I admitted to how many good ideas I stole from wife, copilots or others you’d be amazed. The thing is, the results are what counts, and being able to accept input and use it is a great skill.

And sometimes being Subject Matter Expert makes you overthink it. There's a legitimate role in a failure analysis group called the "none" - someone who has no experience in the topic and is willing to ask the "stupid" questions that the experts overlook. Because sometimes that's where the answer is hiding.
