Spare ECU...

2447 Views 30 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  The Tony Show
Been trying to do some research on flash programmers vs. having the ECU tuned and it appears that having a stealth V-tune or EFI live etc is the way to go. I don't want to use the computer that is in the car for fear of the dealer reflashing it. Is it possible to buy a spare ECU to swap in and out of these cars so that I could have one Tuned ECU and one for dealer work etc?

You can buy a spare and keep it around for that, but I have found that the dealers don't care (the ones that I deal with).

The caveat is that I haven't had to complain about anything that caused them to work on the computer.

Stealth does very good work.
Heavy's right (as usual).

I purchased a second PCM from GMPartsDirect, and they sent me a remanufactured unit that turned out to be defective. A glitch in the fuel injector drivers caused an occasional misfire. By the time Rick (StealthV) and I figured out what was going on, GMPD not only refused to take it back for credit, they even screwed me out of the core charge! That was a total of $408 down the toilet. :rant2: Suffice it to say, I will never buy ANYTHING from them again!!!

So, I then got a PCM from Rick, had him put his tune on it, and it works perfectly. Plus, Rick backs his stuff with the kind of customer service a business ought to have.

When I originally had GM bushings installed (Sept '05), the dealer reflashed my PCM for some reason that escapes me at present; they were doing everyone's V at the time. Now, when I go into the dealer, I pop the stock one in, and it's peace of mind that the dealer won't hurt anything. But, as Heavy said, they've never messed with it since that first time. :D

Wasn't there a problem after changing the computer to a stealthv one that you had to go to the dealer to fix with a tech-II?? I've been wanting a stealthv extra one myself, but i think a crank or cam sensor had to be reset with a tech-II???? Now i can't remember, but i know something had to be done after the swap?? I think it was causing a no start condition?? Had this been worked out? Someone set me straight on this because i forgot what it was that had to be done.. It was more than just enetering the vin.
Nope. No problem here with StealthV tune.

I think earlier (couple of years ago?), you're right, there was some crank position sensor issue and a relearn process, but that's been solved. :yup:

It wasn't changing to a Stealth V tune that was the problem. I used to be that any time you put a new PCM (or even the same one with a new tune like the one from Stealth V) that you would have to do a crank position re-learn procedure to sync the PCM to the engine. This needed to be done with a Tech II (or EFI Live or HP Tuners...)

I have an extra ECU but you need to do a CPK after the swap. I have EFILive and love it.

I just had to get my IPC reprogrammed for the oil temp issue, and even though my guys swear they didn't touch the PCM, I still lost my Stealth tune (my fans stopped running on after shutoff). I'm thinking about ordering a spare PCM from Rick as well for future swaps, so I would also like to know (Florian?) if the CPK is still required.
sorry about the double post...
Is Stealth V still in business? I went over to their site and there is nothing there.
Yes, I just spoke to him on the phone 2 days ago.

His web site seems to be down (maybe the hosting company) at the moment, and he told me he'd be out of town for a few days on business.
I have two - one w/ StealthV and the other w/ std Magnusson

The service manager at the dealer I use knows about the mods I've done. At the annual inspection, the car draws a crowd from the service techs to see what I've done to the car this year. My drivetrain warranty is gone anyhow.

When I bring it in for inspection, I put the maggie pcm in - just in case something gets screwed up.

When you switch them out do you need a crankshaft relearn?

Nope. Just install and go.
Anyone purchased a PCM from Lindsay recently? Curious about how much they get for one.
They replaced my nav because of the buttons. Now the car doesnt go into competitive driving mode. If i have them fix that, will they mess with the pcm? I have since put the maggie on and have their tune installed. Are the nav unit and pcm on the same system?

Sweet- thanks for that info.

I had the nav update done (twice) and never had the tune changed. However, since they hook up the Tech II and mess with the non-engine portion of the PCM it would certainly be possible that the mechanic could reflash the engine tune. Bottom line, if he/she does the nav update correctly it shouldn't have any effect on your engine tune.
If you get EFILive you can pull out a copy of the stock tune and save it. You can then flash in changes or put the stock back in for dealer visits. Only takes a minute with a laptop. No need for spare PCMs IMO, plus getting to ours is a mother from what I saw.

No disrespect to the StealthV tune but if you are mechanically inclined and can work a PC you'll appreciate the tune that much more if you do it yourself. If you have the LS6 the EFILive prices plus a wideband sensor won't run you much more than a 3rd party tune. Do yourself a favor and at least read up on it at the efilive.com website you can even download a copy of the software to play with.
