My 94 Eldorado Northstar has a chirping noise coming from the engine when it is idling. Also lately there is a whining sound coming from the front of the engine also. I thought it might be the water pump starting to go but someone I was talking to, who is fairly knowledgeable about engines says it was something about a pulley and the serpentine belt. When I asked if it was just an adjustment, he smiled and said (afraid not). Sounds ominous. I know this isn't much information but does anyone have any ideas as to what he was talking about?

most likely the tensioner. They can wear at the pivot point, and as the belt rotates, it will kind of oscillate the tensioner which makes the chirp.

The solution is a new tensioner. Last I checked they were like $50(?)

you can test this by removing the belt and starting it up to see if it goes away.

Get a stethescope and aim it at parts until you can pinpoint what you need to replace. It's probably the tensioner... IMO if you're gonna replace the belt tensioner it's probably worth it to do the idler pulley (like $12 IIRC) while you're down there.
