Cruise Ship Facts

You may be surprised (Like I was) of some of these interesting facts about Cruise ships.
Did you know that some of the best restaurants in the world are on Cruise Ships? They employ only the top chiefs and pay near $200,000 a year to head Chiefs. Here are some facts that will amaze you, whether you have been on a Cruise or not.

The Norwegian Star weighs 92,000 tons and has 810 miles of electric cable and 65 miles of pipe just within her haul alone. There are 835 exterior windows and 1,834 interior doors. The crew consists of 1,100 people coming from 64 different countries. With just over 2, 200 guests, that is a 2 to 1 guest crew ratio. (So service is pretty good)
She has 14 floors with 12 elevators, 4 swimming pools, 2 water slides, 10 Jacuzzis, 13 bars and lounges, 10 restaurants, basketball court, 2 golf driving nets, a movie theater, library, game room, casino, spa, complete fitness center, gift shop, internet service, photo department, art director, shore excursion desk, 24 hour room service (no extra charge) Live music in all lounges, Las Vegas shows nightly, sports bar and one Helicopter pad. .
The ship goes though 15,000 lbs of beef, 11,000 lbs of poultry, 10,000 lbs of sea food, 38,000 of vegetables, 30,000 lbs of fresh fruit, 15,000 lbs of flour, 35,000 eggs, in just one 7 day cruise!!!!!!!!!
The average weight a person gains that does not exercise on board is 10-15 lbs. in one week. For the record I worked out an hour a day and gained 8 lbs.

The engine puts out 79,800 HP at a top speed of 25 knots (not very fast)

I thought this was really neat:

It is a tanker called the "Jahre Viking"
It is the worlds longest ship at 1503 feet long, about 670 feet longer than the titanic. It is 2x the size of the famous Edmund Fitzgerald which sunk in 1975 in Lake Superior.

I agree, on cruises you really get the most bang for your buck. I took one last year (2004) and enjoyed it. The ship was fairly packed, but I was one of the first on board, and just checked to see if I could get an upgrade from my waterview room up to one with a Balcony, and they had one open which I got FREE!

One other aspect I love is meeting new people. The dining was great, the only complaint I had was that the "upscale" restuarant on board wouldn't let me wear my flip-flops and Hawaiian T-Shirt, so they made me go put on my suit!

Have you guys heard about that new "Queen Mary 2"?
Its the world's largest cruise ship

Its 1132 feet long (almost 400 feet shorter than that ship I showed earlier), and it weighs 151,400 tons, and cost about $800,000,000 to build!

I haven't heard much about outbreaks of Norwalk virus on cruise ships this year. Does anyone know if there is a lower incidence or are the cruise lines just doing a better job of keeping it quiet?

Fishing story:

A one of my "lazy night" fishing spots near our home is in the harbour of the River Blyth, Blyth Valley, a highly active port. You cand rive the car through the railings and get right on the waterfront, which i do regularly, means you can sit in the car with the heat on and radio running and watch the line, at 2am nobody cares. One night I'm sitting in the passenger seat of my Vectra (passenger side was nearer the water, so sat there) and I see my line twitching like mad, I jump out of the car and run over and strike whatevers on my line, frantically reeling in, reeling and reeling.

I hear "chug chug chug chug chug" and look to my left to see a massive oil tanket chugging along.

Then it hit, what did I catch? A FECKING OIL TANKER!
