I found this searching through completed auctions for Phaetons...

2004, 29k miles... went for 42k. That is absolute insanity, its a 100k car!

Man... at this rate I might as WELL hold out for the W12 rather than the V8... The W12s have pretty much every option and 420hp to boot. I sure as hell better plan on keeping it for a while... it wont be easy to turn later.

The main drawbacks to these are the CD based Navigation, Im not sure if they have radar cruise control and they seem to have a wimpy 270 Watt sound system in a category that has cars with 3 and 400 watt Dolby systems.

still, thats 60 percent depreciation in a matter of about a year and a half. Seems a little excessive to me. Your almost paying for the raw parts cost of the car at that point. Im either going cheap and getting a Lincoln LS, another value plummeting car, or whole hog and getting one of these. The BMW, Mercedes alternatives just dont seem that attractive being a few years older and more miles for the same money.

You know I used to think it was boring too, compared to the A8, but the design is really growing on me. The biggest thing I like about it is you wont see 500 of them driving down the road every day.

I dont think the badge really matters, the car still has an imposing stature and looks very big coming down the road. It looks important regardless of the fact it doesnt say MB or BMW. And you KNOW how much I like BMW. I just dont see that all the extra you pay for a 745 with more miles and probably more problems/LESS warranty, would be worth it.

It will be a little while before I can get my hands on a Phaeton, 5 or 6 months maybe. Well see how low they are then. The beginning of the year value drop is coming in January, well see how much that affects the market prices.

Aside from the image issue, this is another reason Cadillasc sales struggle in the UK.
UK prestige car buyers are very snobby and want the right badge and over here, Cadillac doesn't have it.
Thus my $70,000 Seville STS was mine for a mere $12,000 5 years and just 15,000 miles on.

Yeah, most people won't ever accept VW building a luxury car, especially THAT kind of luxury car, which means that if you don't care about brand names, its a great steal, because nobody's going to want to pay that much for a used Volkswagen, whether it be luxury or a Golf...

No, thats the thing! We dont KNOW how much the OWNER of the car got! It was a trade in at a VW dealership, and THEY were trying to get rid of it. I imagine if they took 42 for the car they paid anywhere between 35 and 40 for it!
