A friend is giving me his aunt's old 1975 Cadillac Fleetwood with the 500 c.i.d. engine in it. I'm thrilled. However, this will be the first smog era big block I have ever worked on so I have some questions. Can a smog era engine easily be awakened into something akin to a 60s big block? What can I do to wake the engine up, so to speak, and what is a reasonable performance goal to shoot for? Thanks!

Yes, plenty. But... upgrades do not come nearly as affordable as a SB Chevy. The cheapest route would be to drop the drive train into a light weight car (G-body is popular) with a good dual exhaust setup, gears, posi, and a 150 NOS shot. If you want to drop the smog you should get rid of it all and replace it with the edelbrock intake and new carb. Google around and you’ll find plenty.
