GM Boosts Ad Spending On DTS, STS
GM to boost ad spending for Cadillac DTS, STS

ST. LOUIS -- General Motors has bolstered its budget to aggressively market the slumping Cadillac DTS and STS sedans in the second half of the year.

Although the luxury sedan segment as a whole is down, GM is not happy with DTS and STS sales, said Mark LaNeve, GM's vice president of vehicle sales, service and marketing.

Through May, DTS sales were down 20.7 percent from the year-ago period, to 17,981 units. STS sales were down 18.1 percent to 8,091 units.

"Cadillac's brand health is already revived," LaNeve said at an event here. "It's not at the level we want to get it to be, but Escalade sales have been very strong. SRX sales have picked up.

"I'm not satisfied with STS and DTS sales, so we're working on very specific plans to get that back on track."

GM has allocated more marketing dollars for the second half of the year. "We'll have a lot of spending on it along with the CTS launch," LaNeve said. He would not say how much GM will spend but said Cadillac is re-examining pricing, incentives and equipment levels.

At last! I was beginning the think that my STS had become an orphan car. The only Cadillac advertising I've seen this year features either the CTS-V winning Speed GT Challenge races (in motorsports magazines--my favorite is "Let's play follow the leader") or a wispy, young blonde thing perched high up in an Escalade (in other media). Cadillac's street presence, here in the San Francisco Bay area, is a DTS with a handicapped driver placard hanging from the rear-view mirror.

Mark La Neve, as your ad agency develops these STS ads, please remind them that the STS is a "Luxury SPORTS Sedan" (quoting the banner at the top of the manufacturer's window sticker--emphasis mine). In the 16 months that I've owned my 2006 STS I have seen NO ads extolling its sporting virtues (the STS-V, yes; the STS, no). Equipped as mine is; with magnetic ride control, Servotronic steering, and high performance brakes and Summer tires; the STS has major enthusiast chops and has nothing for which it should apologize to Audi, BMW, or Mercedes (or Lexus or Infinity). Cadillac has a self-made opportunity to tell America that there's a new kid on the (performance sedan) block. :LittleB::woohoo:

 STS......as in Seville Touring Sedan. SLS......as in Seville Luxury Sedan. As in all top-of-the-line vehicles, slumping sales might be a combination of sticker shock, recalls, and customer returns for multiple manufacturing defects. And.....the loss of confidence inspired by press coverage of the President's Cadillac limousine stalling in the middle of Italy didn't help, either....at least my STS gets up to H fuel cutoff regularly (one of the advantages of rural farm country...).
H fuel cutoff?

And what about the ETC, as in Cadillac Et Cetera. Cadillac misspelled a derivation of Et Cetera and gave us the Catera.
 Most of the GM line, and many others, use a tire rating from OEM supplied equipment to program the engine PCM for maximum vehicle speed, regardless of perceived horsepower.......Look at the door sticker for tire specs.....An S tire OEM is limited to 118 mph. An H rating is 130 mph. V or W, or maybe Z are 150+. If your car carries an H rating, the PCM cuts off fuel flow at 130 mph. Reprogram is like searching for the Holy Grail. (Eldorado Touring Coupe) (Coupes and Sedans are different body styles)
Does anyone have any idea when the money is coming on these products? I have been waiting three weeks to lease a new vehicle for my wife. Based on current programs, a v6 awd sts is more than I am presently paying for my o7 v8 awd.

If I were a betting man I would say that the new money will hit next week. The current programs are scheduled to expire on the 9th of July. I'd hold out till then before pulling the trigger. I just got a call back from a Cadillac salesman that I talked to a few weeks ago asking if I had made a move yet and he said that the leases on the 07s should be getting better soon. *cross fingers*
GM needs to figure out a way to take everyone in country making $100k and up for a short ride in a DTS/DHS.

Sales will go out the roof--just based on the ride. True if they can drive cars without the sport suspension.

I learned very quickly to avoid, at all costs, riding in the back seat of my CTS. Rides like a VW pickup truck. But then I am used to the old SDV.
I could not waite any longer for the Cadillac folks to come up with some realistic STS lease programs, so I got the wife a V6 Lucerne CXL for $225 less a month than a 1SB v6 STS.
i like the lucerne. especially all dressed up with the large chrome wheels and v8. its a little to conservative for me but i think it has been overlooked by the people who might buy avalons and grand marquis.
Funny, I did not get that opinion. The grand marquis has got to be the most dated and plain car produced. Other than the suspension being a little softer and the dash lacks some style, the Lucerne reminds me a lot of the 98-04 Seville.
the grand marquis is a nightmare of a vehicle. its like a 25 year old design. i would never compare that to what you bought.
, the Lucerne reminds me a lot of the 98-04 Seville.

It's built on the same G body platform as the old Seville.

:lies:?
Where's all this STS advertising? The August issue of Car & Driver magazine includes a complimentary "Short Take" (half-page editorial blurb) on the '08 STS V6 (the big-news direct injection motor). What does Cadillac advertise in this issue? The Escalade! Good move, Mark. The Three Stooges couldn't have done better.
The Grand Marquis is smooth and reliable, as terribly dated as it is. The Lucerne and Seville don't compare for dependability.
FYI..STS sales for JULY 2007.......1611......pitiful!!

Where do you get the numbers? Is there a list back to the first month in 2004 when the STS came on sale? Does this break out STS and STS-V, 6 and 8 cyl?
this number is from the gm website. it is listed under july '07 sales. it does not breakdown v6/v8/v sales just total of all.
1611 isn't pitiful just yet, unless you compare STS sales to the Seville. Infiniti was down to a dozen or so Q45s sold each month.

When I leased in February, I wanted an AWD sedan and found the same type of difference between the STS and Lincoln MKZ. As much as I liked the STS, the price difference and lease incentives on the Lincoln helped sway me to the dark side.
