I am looking at buying this STS-V and am concerned about the manifolds being replaced three times. Is this normal for this car? I have also noticed a lot of battery replacements on the STS Vin #'s I have had checked. Is it normal to have so many battery replacements on STS's?

Any thoughts would be appreciated before I pull the trigger on this car.

Thanks,
Steve

Good lord! Thats quite a laundry list for a 45k car! Most of us (exception of CIWS, and inurok) have had engine or transmission related repairs.

Mine has 16k on it now and most of my issues has been rather small.. Wheel hubs, Updates to NAV, PCM, TCM, steering rack squeaked when warm, etc.

I'll let everyone else chime in but waterpump, cats, intake manifold, etc.. looks a little hairy..

ive had the exhaustmanfold and cat replaced its all one peace on our cars mine has 25K on it
Was it for the Cat being bad ?

I had a lower crankcase seal leaking at around 3,000 miles and they pulled the engine to fix it. Upon replacement they muxed something up with the supercharger and damaged the lower door panels in the process, so it had to go back to them so they could resolve those issues.

Here's what mine looked like. Discovered it while it was on the dyno.

Now as I was told that leak wasn't that bad, too the degree that if I hadn't discovered it and said something to them about it, and they saw it during a oil change or something, they would have just wiped it off.

That's a little disturbing because little leaks can turn into big leaks and Murphy says it will happen at the most inconvenient time it can.

I don't think that's any worse than mine, but I LITERALLY dream up reasons to bring my car in...:stirpot:

What I do see is it did take them a while to figure out what was knocking out the cats, it, more than likely, was that intake manifold problem. Keep in mind that cats DON'T GO BAD ON THEIR OWN,THEY ARE DRIVEN BAD...most likely due to a drivability issue like poor mixture or engine misfire...either one causing the cats to work too hard and burn themselves out.

That car probably had a reeeealy picky owner(someone like me, for instance). I can tell by the high number of NPF's, and / or bad technicians who are having trouble diagnosing the problems reported.

A Service Advisor who doesn't know the charictaristics of these cars can send a technician looking for a problem that does not exist, as well.

So, no,you have no real need to be concerned. But, I will advise you as I do my friends. You do not want to own a late model, high tech automobile without the FACTORY AUTHORIZED EXTENDED WARRANTY for as long as you can afford to pay for. I mean that! :rant2:
STS-V engine is over $13,000 retail...nobody fixes them and you don't want to let them, trans is over $5,000, s/charger is $5,500...etc....Get a warranty, drive it and enjoy it.

The first part sounds like me :) -- Mine has new seat covers on order as we speak because they are 'crinkling' (photos upon request) and is getting a little excessive. And no I don't mean a wrinkle, I mean like the leather is stress cracked in some areas. Only the drivers seat back and the right rear bottom seat cushion has done this but nevertheless. The other areas are completely wrinkle free and 'crinkles' so its very odd. Service manager at my dealership didn't that that should be normal by any means.

What about the battery issues? Many of the STS's I have looked at have had numerous battery replacements. One of them has had three batteries in only 35,000 miles. Is this a normal problem with this model? Is it because of the many accessories installed on these cars?

Have any of you had excessive battery problems?

Thanks,
Steve

It seems like most of the folks experiencing this are ones that don't use the car as a daily driver and the car sits for a week without being driven. However I will say I don't think the stock AC Delco battery is all that great for this car, which is why I went ahead on my own and swapped it for an Optima Redtop battery.

I'm on my second battery. My STS-V is a daily driver, and one morning, the battery was just dead. No warning, just completely dead. Fortunately, it was in my garage at home. I jumpstarted the car and drove it to the dealer. They replaced the battery under warranty with another OEM battery. No problems since.

They said that the original battery had a cell go bad.

At 45K miles you may have another 5K before the warranty is expired. You DO NOT want a car like this without a warranty behind it. Not because it's a problem car, but in case something does break you do not want the repair bill. See if they will sell it Certified Pre-Owned (may cost extra), or check into the cost of having the GMPP extended warranty put on it right as you buy it.

i havent really had that many probs with my car other then the rear end getting replaced and the cat going bad my wheels the clear is coming off some of them and the dealer i go to wont replace them and the front seat bottoms look like shit but they also wont replace them they will spray them but i said no thanks to that. My car is still under fact warrenty and i am also cert till its well worth paying for it if the dealer will do it or the gmpp just to have something if you plan on keeping the car for awhile other then the 2 things ive had the car since 18Kmiles and now has right around 26K on it and has been awsome
