Have a 1999 Cadillac deville 63,000 miles have owned it about 18 mos. have had coolant crossover and water pump crossover resealed due to leak, them had lower radiator hose replaced due to leak. Still leaking, dealer says now that both cylinder head gaskets are starting to leak, plus misfiring and pulling up p0300 code, which they say plug/wire #5 foul and should replace all at $550 but if head are starting to leak externally this concerns me. I need it to last at least 4 years or get rid of it now. Any ideas?

A head gasket job on these cars, at a dealership, is about $4500+. What is your approximate location ??? CF members have knowledge of several good independent shops around the country that specialize in this sort of work, and they do it for considerably less than a dealership.

Whoa! HG's don't leak externally on the Northstar. While the '99 is about the worst for HG reliability, if you have an external leak, I wouldn't jump to a HG failure. Are you overheating? How exactly did the dealer come to that conclusion? Did they do a block test? Plugs and wires might solve the misfire. Hard to tell about the leak though. I'd get a second or third opinion.

It all depends how much you luv the car and current condition the 1999 is a tough one though as it has the highest rates of HG problems so be forwarned 4 years i dont think so as it might be already in the early stages

they did a block test when I had first repair the crossover seal and was fine. We at that time discussed HG prob? he assured me oh not your car, did great. Then still leaking said rad hose. Took it in yesterday due to misfire code and I mention coolant still runs low so he says well prob due to that slight external head leak we talked about before and I said well not with me did you say this, so suddenly today he says oh yeah we saw the cylinders had a slight leak externally. Mind you 1st repair low coolant light came on again and he told me prob air bubbles because they put a very rich dex cool in after repairs, just typing that I feel dumber. I am taking to neighborhood mech for 2nd opion. I love Cadi's and cant imagine driving anything else.

It is very, very, VERY rare, that an HG issue will cause an external leak, but if that's the case, it's STILL an HG issue.

What is "rich dex cool" supposed to be???

I really am not sure but apparently it would cause air bubbles so they didn't fill it as much so was then running low. I cant believe I believed that because thinking on it now, sounds ridiculous. So at this point I don't know if I have a HG issue or mechanic issue and Ranger no she does not overheat.

Ok, for starters, don't go back to whatever shop you've been using.

Coolant and fill level are simple: 50/50% mix of coolant and distilled water. DEX or all makes/all models "green stuff", doesn't matter. Proper level, checked cold, is to the FULL COLD line on the surge tank.

So at this point I don't know if I have a HG issue or mechanic issue and Ranger no she does not overheat.
Well you definitely have a mechanic issue, you need to find a real one.

As for the HGs. A shop that knows what they're doing, (or you) need to do a block test.

If the external leak isn't obvious, the system should be pressurized cold, with a cooling system pressure test kit.

yes I am going to go back to my local mechanic we had used for year. After my husband passed my daughter thought we should use a dealer (GM) mech well not so much, sad thing they even had the rental car agency come get us and said oh you'll get a great rate, was more than if we booked on line. Shame on me, but not again. Thanks for great insight everyone.

I'm with MC. Not overheating and an external leak makes a HG issue seem MUCH less likely. Hard to say for sure and I hate to make accusations, but there is a possibility that the dealer is stroking you in hopes that you'll roll over and unload it (cheap) and buy a new car. Caveat Emptor!

yes I have thought maybe their not being quite forth right. I mean every time a salesman comes out to show us cars, hhmmm.... and its amazing what these dealers sell even the used ones for here, when I got this 1 with only 56000 miles on it another dealer have 1 with 40000 miles and wanted $8000 dollars, I thought that was crazy but I love the devilles and find myself shooting everything else down. Somehow Im keeping my car, I'm ok with investing some on an old good running car.

skipgate is correct.. Dump it before you put another dime in it. I wish I did mine and so far the hg is holding at 164K But we will dump it if the hg goes on our 5000 mi long trip. We'll take it to a salvage yard, rent a car and continue on with our trip. There just has to come a point when you have to say"no more" (unless your rich) and then if you are you can buy new.My 98 deville looks like it just came off the showroom floor and it would hurt like hell to see it go to salvage but like I said fixing and fixing goes only so far.If its not hg you may give it another look A hg is the only way I would ever get rid of mine. But I've replaced the entire suspension system, fuel pump,(had to have tank dropped (98) plus some other things I cant remember right now. Was going to get the astro roof fixed so it would open. But was advised by the dealer ship to just leave it closed. Its not leaking. Because it would cost more than the cars worth to fix it. You cant buy just parts for it anymore you have to buy the entire unit, Cost ? 1600 to 3000 dollars. Labor included of course. Dont know if I would buy another older than 2006 next time. But you cant beat that Cadillas ride. Nothing even comes close.
Good luck in sorting this out..

so today put new plugs and wires in due to the misfire code, cleared the code and all seems well. In fact ran so smooth. #2 and #5 were worn and just replaced all. Now I'm going to get a 18lb radiator cap and see if that solves my low coolant issue, since the car never overheats. Thanks again for great insight.
