i pulled my heads to do the timesert process. i set #1 to TDC. crank sprocket is at 12 oclock. intermediate sprocket is at 6 oclock. all the cam sprocket dots/slots are at 12 oclock relative to the head surface. now when i turn the crank, i have to go thru 10 revs before all the dots line up. i have heard it should be 7 revs. at TDC, #1 cam lobes are almost straight up. if i turn the crank 360, should the lobes be 180 out? seems right to me with a 4 cycle motor.

96 STS northstar. i still am not sure what the dot on the intermediate sprocket does. if the crank dot is at 12 oclock, who cares about the intermediate sprocket? all i care about is the crank and cam sprockets. turn crank 720 deg, cam should turn 360 degree.

I looked at the very large pictures of the cam gears and timing lay out. Boy I wish I could post it here.
It sounds like you have it in time, but you should look. I posted the complete FSM engine assembly procedure

the info looked like things i have seen before. thanks for posting it. i think i did it right. crank is 27 teeth, intermediate is 42 teeth or something like that. you turn the crank 360 and the inter sprocket will now be 15 teeth off. turn it again and it will be still be off. eventually, it will line up, but how many turns is that? my intake and exhaust sprockets are all lined up right. LE and LI and RE and RI. i did not take my sprockets off the cams or turn the cams when the heads were off. how can i mess up?

all the info talks about the intake sprockets. i have yet to see anything that says what the exhaust sprocket should be pointed at. there may be some vague illustration that shows the exhaust sprocket but it would be nice to actually mention it. and maybe say that both sprockets are the same part # and the exhaust sprocket is just rotated 180 degrees.
