Was ready to go to dealer later today when I came across this thread. 2011 CTS (48K miles) had "service airbag" light on for a few weeks. Forward/Back and tap tap on connectors, lights out. Thanks Tinman, I hope you win $2 million!

A couple of days ago, I got the "Service Airbag" message and pulled C-0899 (communications/voltage fault). Sadly, the old bag of manipulating the front wires and connectors by squeezing the folded carpet flap at the front of the driver's seat did not work for me this time - it always had on previous occasions.

So I pulled out that carpet flap at the front, disconnecting the three front connectors and cleaned out each with electrical contact cleaner. Nada.

Message still illuminated. Rats.

In a last ditch effort, I squeezed the connector bundle on the passenger side.

Message goes away.

There's a very good bourbon for that.

Sorry in advance for resurrecting an old thread.

I had an issue related to this on the highway today but I need some guidance. I was cruising at ~60 mph (night time, 6:30pm) and all of the interior lights in the cabin came on at once and my tachometer and speedometer needles dropped to zero while I was still moving. The DIC said “Service Air Bag” briefly but it went away after a split second. The airbag light came on but disappeared just as fast as the DIC message. The engine went dead as did the entire center stack, no hazards, turn signals (from what I could tell), brake lights, radio shut off.

At the time I had my backpack on the seat which has my laptop, key fob, headphones, etc. in it. It’s heavy enough to trip the weight sensor to activate the passenger airbag. I managed to get over to the shoulder and the center stack came back on, hazards worked, engine started, seemingly back to normal.

I drove home no problem and did another test drive with no problems either. Could this be related to the airbag module? I’m really at a loss here.

This happened once before in my 2005 CTS, whole interior electronics turned off. No lights on dash, needles dropped to 0 but engine kept running and I drove home without a hitch. That happened almost 6 years ago and it has never happened again. Im wondering if it’s just a fluke?

Could be.
The airbag sensors are very sensitive to outside current (phones, electronic devices, etc.).

What’s interesting to me is every morning when I go to work my backpack lives on my passenger seat and every afternoon it’s in the same spot. Never had it happen then. Maybe it’s a bad/loose ground somewhere and it messed with the electrical

Do you have a sunroof and has the car recently seen rain?

Sometime it's a simple as the switch for the light when you open the door.

Did you try what I did as laid out in post #25.
So in my case I dont have the light on my dash at all. When my whole debacle happened it went haywire for a second but went away as soon as it came.

I moved the passenger seat back and pushed on the carpet just in case that was the culprit, but it hasn't happened since then and I hope it stays far far away!

I'd check for a loose ground somewhere - losing all power quickly and then having it restored sounds a lot like a poor connection somewhere. It might have been a fluke but it could reoccur.

I do have a sunroof that has seen rain but it’s a coupe so they weren’t plagued with the sunroof backing up into the footwell
Not true... You have to check the drains... My 2012 wagon doesn't have the issue but you should verify in your coupe instead of just assuming it didn't have the faulty drains.
