Alright, figured I'd pose this to the board! So on my '99 with a little under 44k miles, I just got the service ac message. I was curious as to what this really means; does it mean I have to recharge the AC? That there's a problem with the system?

I hit info/reset to clear it, and when the AC is on, it feels great, no complaints. I don't run the AC on too much, but the car is from Florida originally, so I'm sure the previous owner probably used it as much as possible.

I want to know if this is something I can do easily, or if I should take it to a shop.

"Generally", it means the refrigerant pressure is outside of normal parameters, but there are other things that can set it.

Ok cool. So maybe I can just grab a can of refrigerant and do a recharge and we'll see what happens.

If it's low, yes that might solve your problem. However, if the charge is NOT low, you COULD damage the compressor by over-charging the system.
