serpentine belt

I have a 86 deville 4.1L and I was wondering when is it time to change my belt. I had one changed at 102 029 and now the milage is. 138 350. The reason why I'm asking is when I start the car up after it is cold before it idles and gets warm I hear a loud sweak and its coming from the belt area. And after 5 minutes its usually gone. I inspected he belt and I see no ripps in it loose teeth on the grooves . So what do I look for on when its to change it any help thanks

Yeah, replace the belt. Also check the auto tensioner to make sure it is good condition. If you see marks where it looks like rusty water has come out of it replace it. Check for this both at the pulley itself and at the pivot point for the pulley arm.
im supposed to look for the rusty water on the pulley or on the belt
FSM recommends inspectiong the belt every 30k miles, so yours is overdue. Could need replacing. Do the tensioner inspection too like D.C. says
thanks will do
Does that thing still use the old V belts or does it have a serpentine belt? Haven't had a 4.1 in years (thank God).
i belive its a v belt . it has just one big belt. when i last looked at it , it looked like it was dry orr greyish like it wasnt new . its not loose and i dont see any signs of it being torn but im gonna ripe it out asap
i looked online and the belt comes in two sizes why is that one says with 120a alternator and the other doesnt
Probably with or without the heated windshield. You may be able to find your alternator rating by going through the RPO codes.
they come in 86 or 87 inches and my alt is rated 120a but i have a aftermarket one but its oem fit
i went to kragen and they was like this year and model came with a gold or black alternator
they come in 86 or 87 inches
Weird! rockauto.com showing the same belt for 1986 thru 1999. It's a serpentine; one size fits all, I guess. AC Delco is $32 freakin dollars!!!! I hope mine will last a little longer. ( I know, I know! That's a cheap price to keep the car running smooth) I remember when a fan belt cost $2.49.
what was the length 86 inches or 87. apparently they have a model with heated windsheild and that model it says on autozone and kragen too. so ill look up on rockauto.com for it

$32 is nothing. Some of the belts we put on customer's cars at school are close to $70. We use Gator brand ones. The best belt we ever did was one that came off a Suburban with seven alternators. Somehow he had made the whole thing run off one belt. In the back there were skids that you could slide something in and out and a HUGE high amperage electrical connector. It never came in with anything in the back and we never asked what went in there. We have a picture of it at school but I would have to get one of my teachers to give it to me.

But they could not last 100K+ and we changed them every other year.
lol tht must of been a long time ago. so tonight im going to look at my service maunal to see the length of it and go with that. i was going to go with this method buy both of them and match the new one with the old one but since the age and milage its been on the car i dont want to toy with it

lol  gone forever when that would also fill your tank with fuel. sigh! Wait a minute, if it lasts that long, it shouldn't need replacing for 64,000 more miles, right Ranger?
I agree. My '92 had 125K and my '97 had 107K when I sold or traded and still had the original belts (and exhaust).
wow i looked at it today and the belt was ok not glossy black as the last one but the pulley didnt look rusty like it was posted in the thread above ill post pics tomorrow
hey guys, i took the tensioner off my 89 deville and now i cant put it on. the tension is to much. what is an easy way of putting it back on? thanks
