I have a 3.2L manual and did the research awhile back and I am pretty sure this it them:

1st Gear 3.57:1
2nd Gear 2.04:1
3rd Gear 1.34:1
4th Gear 1.0:1
5th Gear .82:1

Here is what speeds I observed at redline (6600). Actually I observed the speeds at 3300 RPM and doubled them.

1st Gear 37 MPH
2nd Gear 66
3rd Gear 100
4th Gear 132
5th Gear - Didn't do 5th.

Those numbers pretty much match R&T's published test sheet. The top speed is limited to 147 mph on the sport model, so you'd only do 5880 RPM in fifth gear in the 3.2 5MT.

The parts list (from CadillacFAQ) also shows different axles for the manual vs. the auto, (a whopping $800 each!) but since the diffs are similar, I'm not sure why they wouldn't mate up. This would be a great way to increase the acceleration of the automatic, but you're speedo would be off by 9% (3:42/3.73), and I know of no way to correct it on our cars.

Thanks! Well, 5th gear will be governed at 142 I think? I think it's 142 w/ the 17's. What's your 5spd manual like? I sorta like the idea of having 1 less gear. I've got the 6spd manual.

Just curious odysseus. Well, more then curious. Seriously considering. I have the 3.6L with the 6spd manual and the 3:42 rear end. Going to the 3.73 should allow me alot more acceleration, but also more gear changes around town right? How about also adapting the 5 spd manual, like yours, to the 3.6? Whats the quality of the 5spd versus the 6spd? Same manufacturer right?

Nope. The 5 speed is made in Germany by Getrag, and is only rated for 220 lb-ft of torque. It's pretty well matched to the 3.2L motor. The 6 speed is made in Japan by Aisin. Even though you've got the 3.42 rear end, the gearing of the Aisin gives it nearly the same overall ratio's as the 5 speed with the 3.73 gears, with basically one more overdrive. I've got the numbers on my work computer (for the Auto, Getrag, Aisin, and the T-56 in the V), I can post tomorrow.

I think changing the rear would be much easier (should be a direct swap) than the transmission, but you'd have speedo errors. Putting the higher geared 5 speed would negate the power gains by going with the 3.73 rear.

Here's the gearing comparison that I mentioned. The first column is the gear, the second is the gear ratio, the third is the gear ratio multiplied by the final drive (rear end ratio). As you can see, the 3.6 is geared a little more agressively (bigger numbers) in all the gears.

gear 5-speed effective
1 3.57 13.32
2 2.04 7.61
3 1.34 5.00
4 1.00 3.73
5 0.82 3.06

final 3.73

gear 6-speed effective
1 4.15 14.19
2 2.23 7.63
3 1.53 5.23
4 1.15 3.93
5 1.00 3.42
6 0.79 2.70

final 3.42
