Lawsuit Alleges Run-Flat Failures

Toyota and Goodyear are being sued for what claimants say are "defective" run-flat tires on the Sienna minivan. A New York law firm filed the suit on behalf of one Stanley Monk and other owners, the AP reports, who charge that the run-flat tires wear out after just 10,000 miles of use. The tires were made by Goodyear but sold under the Dunlop imprint on the Toyota minivan. Run-flat tires are designed with stiff sidewalls that provide on-road capability even when a tread puncture deflates the tire. Lawyers allege in the suit that the tire wear effectively means the tires must be replaced yearly at a cost of $1300 or more.

With the CTS-V, we'd consider 10,000 miles long-term on the run flats. Maybe we should all contact the class actions lawyers and see if we can join the party--or have one of our own.

I wonder if they ask the Sienna owners if they drive their cars hard when they wear out so quickly, like they asked me.

And what exactly are the Sienna tires. Perhaps you can bend your expectation of tire life for max performance summer tires on a hipo sports sedan, but I don't think I'd just roll over and accept 10k miles tire wear from a minivan.

I guess I'd have to know more about the treadwear rating on the tire and if the van has suspension or alignment issues, but unless buyers are told about tire wear being way far from what is normally expected from a vehicle in that class (minivan), I think there's going to be bad blood between Toyota and their buyers. As a buyer, why would you presume tires will last less than a year for just the benefit of not dragging along a spare and a jack.

I guess you are the ultimate proponent of let the buyer beware. Should have looked more closely at the tire labelling before they bought their van, LOL.

Sorry Brian; my comment was directed at the notion posted earlier that we should join/start class action litigation regarding the EMTs on the CTS-V.

On the other hand, maybe those Siennas are faster than I was thinking...

I have not seen a tire wear issue case go anywhere.

What if there's like 8 hungry hippos in the Sienna's daily? Isn't that a question that they should be asking? That would explain the low mileage on the tires.

Do you mean you willingly exceeded the established capacity of the vehicle by accomodating 8 hippos in the vehicle on a continuous basis?
You were operating the vehicle in a known unsafe manner on a regular basis?

Who knows...but maybe this case may help us with the unreasonable and uncustomary wear we are experiencing with our tires.

The testimony of Mr. Appleton, the McDonald's executive, didn't help the company, jurors said later. He testified that McDonald's knew its coffee sometimes caused serious burns, but hadn't consulted burn experts about it. He also testified that McDonald's had decided not to warn customers about the possibility of severe burns, even though most people wouldn't think it possible. Finally, he testified that McDonald's didn't intend to change any of its coffee policies or procedures, saying, "There are more serious dangers in restaurants."

Mr. Elliott, the juror, says he began to realize that the case was about "callous disregard for the safety of the people."

Mongo not drink coffee in morning. Mongo not able to handle first cup of coffee until Mongo already have first cup of coffee. That why Mongo drink Diet Coke in morning now.

The lawyers must really be trolling when they are suing for tire wear.:histeric:

When you think about it, if the tires wear so fast, how come they are so expensive?
They should be stamping these out like cookies.
Me thinks oil companies aren't the only ones taking advantage of us.

Two of the claims by the plaintiff make this sort of interesting...

- he called the 1800 Dunlop number and was told the tires should last 40,000 miles.

- the treadwear rating is apparently 360 which he claims is not in line with a tire that lasts less than 10,000 miles

I used to work for a Toyota dealer for 4 1/2 years in the parts and accessories dept. We had a pretty good tire program for our customers, and never once did I see some run flats come through our warehouse for stock. BUT.....I did hear the sales people consistantly say it had run flats instead of the tire pressure sensors. It, and many other models from Toyota, do have those!!!
