Roof rack storage unit

I'm in the process of modifying some bracets to allow attaching a Thule Weekender storeage box to the roof rails. In order to clear the ultra sun roof if open, it looks like I need approx. 1 1/2" above the rails. Anyone have any experience with excessive wind noise with that much clearance?
I also use the Thule on my Envoy and had to lower it to reduce wind noise.

I have an '06 V6 with ultraview. I have a Sears cargo shell. I purchased the GM roof bars and attached the cargo shell to the bars. I have probably an 1.5" of clearance and have little or no wind noise when driving at highway speeds. Just make sure you don't overload the roof racks. I wouldn't put more than 100lbs on the roof. I am not sure if the roof racks are for looks, or if they can be used for utilility. I can tell you I have used the cargo shell 2 times in the past year and have had no problems.
To clear an opened roof, I needed about 3" of total clearance. This gave 1 1/2" when the roof was open. Took it on it's maiden voyage into Winslow and wind noise was minimal.

n7don_srx,

Your post and picture helped me a lot when we were still shopping for our SRX back in June. At that time, we were still considering a few vehicles and the SRX. We were wondering if our Thule Cascade box would fit on the SRX and how it would look. Saw your post and picture and convinced my girlfriend that it would be okay.

We traded our Chevy Equinox for a 2008 SRX two weeks ago and here is how it looks with GM Roof Rack Utility Bars (Part number 12498684). Tryed it at high speed and wind noise is minimal, as stated on other posts.

We also had the OEM Trailer Hitch installed in order to carry our bike carrier.

Thanks again for sharing with us,

Mike.

Mike_1103,

I'm thinking about installing a factory trailer hitch to my SRX which is the same color as yours. Do you have a picture of the back without bike rack showing only the hitch?

Thanks

Sure.

Here are two shots: one showing the overall rear of the car, and a zoom on the hitch.

Hope this helps,

Mike.
