general question...bearings have spun. Do you need to replace piston rods and caps?

For the Northstar, the crank, rods, and bearings are all replaced as a unit if a bearing spins: the Factory Service Manuals do not allow machining the chamfered journals.

The rods are of the "cracked cap" variety, meaning that every rod/cap is an individual unique unit.

It's a 1996 Olds 3.1L SFI OHV v-6

If you shut the engine off in time the rod would be ok. Some people are hard of hearing and don't notice the knock until the bearing literally spins out of place and can start wearing into the rod. I have re-used a bad rod once in a 350 Chevy and it worked fine but I wouldn't have dared to take it on a long trip. It always worried me but never failed me. If that 96 Olds has a mangled rod then it wouldn't be worth fixing.

Am I the only one wondering what this has to do with a FWD Cadillac that doesn't use the remotely the same motor? This belongs in the lounge.
