Reprogram Engine Control Module helped my hard shifts and...

Check engine light came on two weeks ago. Finally got in last Friday. Nothing felt wrong when I was driving it, but there was a high pitched windy whirring noise when I would be at speed and let off the gas. Press the fuel and the noise went away, ease off, it came back. Onstar reported back Emissions Issue.

The dealer gave it back same day and they reprogrammed the ECM. The check engine is light off, the whirring noise is gone, and my hard shifts have improved tremendously. Does that make sense?

After the reprogram, the next two times I backed out of my driveway and shifted into drive my RPM shot up quick and dropped back down, as if it downshifted too soon, but how would it downshift, I just put it in drive from reverse. After that, it would drive fine. So I was like frick, this isn't good.

But it never happened again, and now my shifting is waaaay smoother. My bone jarring 1 - 2 is much smoother and quite often seamless. Every shift after 2nd is super smooth. So much so that I really notice the difference.

Another odd thing, when I set my Drive Mode to Sport, and I turn off my car it stays on Sport on next start up. This didn't happen before, it would always revert to Touring. I much prefer it staying where I set it like it does now, but I didn't think that it works that way.

Any of these things make sense? They seem pretty random. No?

I would love to hear more about this as my car shifts horribly and I’ve already had it flushed. I’ll be driving and let off the gas and it will slam into the next gear. Shifts 2-3 are the worst but the first shift can be bad also.

I would take my car to the dealership tomorrow and ask for EXACTLY what they did to your car if it meant a no hard shifts. It makes driving this car painful. Every time I get in it I want to drive something else. If this stays the same I’ll be out of this vehicle right before my CPO Warranty expires 1000% worst shifting car I’ve ever owned. Period.

Funny thing is I didn't bring it in complaining about the hard shifts. Many of us live with it.

What I have from invoice is:
Onstar code: 2096
SCAN TEST P02096 / 00POST Catalyst fuel trim system low limit bank1. Check updates Doc#5164817 for engine CM Programming.
Correction: Reprogram Engine Control Module as per update. Claim Code 11YN4583243.Clear Code.

Maybe it's reset the transmission to learning mode again?

I had them reprogram the transmission over a year ago and nothing changes. Please report back after a while and let me know if things go back to the way they were. If not, I’ll bring your info in to the dealership and ask for the same to see if my car changes for the better.

Thanks for sharing!

I don't know why this post was moved to Mods. The ECM reprogram isn't anything custom or a performance mod. It was a GM factory reprogram. All other posts about hard shifts and general technical issues end up in General Discussion. I'd suggest moving this back there so others can find the info if they need it for similar issues.
