I bought a rebuilt front diff for my 2004 AWD and finally got the thing drop out. However, the replacement does not have the side shaft attached, so I need to remove and reuse from the old one. How do I get that thing removed? I saw a video on youtube where a guy rebuilt the diff and he just pried these off. No luck for me. See picture.

BTW: Got the diff from Rock Auto and it has a 5yr 100,000 warranty when you use synthetic oil.

(Excuse me posting this as my first message on the board rather than an introduction..)

I recently bought an '05 ESV Platinum at a local dealership and their inspection failed to mention that my front differential was on the verge of catastrophic failure. I had a shop replace it with a rebuilt one and parts plus labor came out to $2100 :mad2: Glad to see that you're doing it yourself.. I'm sure your wallet is too!

Got one of them out - still working on the other. Requires more brute force and ignorance than I thought.
Hey kc may be you can explain a little better on how to remove the side shaft for anyone else that may stumble across this thread in hopes that there is may be a trick or two.

Thanks

i just took a 3 pound hammer and gave it a few good wacks. i just fixed mine 2 days ago after riding on it 3 years with a horrid grinding. i got a rebuilt 4x4 diff from a sierra truck and took the passenger axle and housing from my escalade diff and installed it on to the 4x4 diff converting it to awd. worked like a charm. A dealer told me this is what they do sometimes because the 4x4 diffs seem to last longer
