Replaced my HID and DRL bulbs today

One of my HID bulbs went out a couple weeks ago. I ordered a new set of 4300k Philips D1S from Amazon @ $88 for a pair - they didn't come with a Certificate of Authenticity but came with the Philips security code that you can check online to verify authenticity. They look real to me, and I guess we'll just have to see how long they last.

I also bought a pair of white LED bulbs to replace the ugly yellow DRLs while I had the lights out.

There are a bunch of threads on here, and youtube videos with instructions on how to get the lights out without taking the bumper off. It wasn't too bad, maybe 15 or 20 clips and 4 bolts to loosen the bumper, then 3 bolts on each headlight.

Once you get the headlight out, you need a 7mm socket to take the back covers off and a T10 torx bit to get the D1S bulbs out. The DRLs are just held in with clips. I used pliers to get these out since my hand wouldn't fit inside to get a good a enough grip to sqeeze the tabs.

I took a few before/after pics of the car and bulbs.

I also noticed that my driver side headlight housing is cracked inside. Have no idea how that happened or how long it's been like that:

I put the links to both bulbs that I used, someone else recommended these in another thread and has decent Amazon reviews. Here is the DRL link:

And D1S:

Your HID bulb dates are: K926 = 26 Oct 2009, M911 = 11 Dec 2009 for the old and 9H30 = 30 Aug 2019 for the new.
Thanks, good to know that I have recent bulbs.

Yes very nice pics and all! I did mine(DRL’s) several times over the years. I found if I searched Amazon real well I could get some 5201 or 5202’s with higher lumens. I believe the last ones were JDMStar’s with 3000 total lumens. VERY bright for DRL’s. Then ended up putting RED DRL’s in my old CTS. Here’s what the red looked like.

For the record, pictures do these light no justice. They look way brighter in person.

You wouldn't get away with those red DRL's here... You would get pulled over real quick... And warned you could be sited for posing as an officer... Same for blue lights.

I‘m guessing I had those in for about a year here in Texas Rod but never got pulled over for it. I honestly never once thought about the red lights being a cop thing. I guess it could have been harassed for it. They’re always looking for shit to F with ya about. I was about to put red DRL’s in my V. I may have to rethink that now🤔

Around here they get real touchy about colors of lights. It is certainly one of those "pull you over" reasons in case you were drinking or doing something else you shouldn't while you drive.

Red to the front lighting and Blue to the front lighting here will get you pulled over real quick.

Also heard they are going after those running LED or HID lighting in their cars as a retrofit because they are too bright. But definetly the colored lights. The State Troupers are real sensitive to those.
Purple or Green will get you pulled over as well. Green is considered for utilities usage only.

Been thinking and maybe my cream/yellow DRLs will be more noticeable than the LED white everyone has.
After all the whole thing started with a Greyhond bus studdy in the early '60s, over 50 years ago, that showed the accidents rate for buses was reduced when they left their headlight on in the day. They were different and people noticed them.

I think the brightness of the bulb is more important than the color. The LEDs are much brigher than the old bubs, but it doesn't come across in the pics.

In direct sunlight you may be able to see the yellow a little better because of the contrasting color, but only because it looks out of place, not because the light output is more noticeable. DRLs are useless in direct sunlight anyway.

Its more about being a distraction to other drivers... Laws here state you must move over for emergency vehicles or be ticketed. You run red DRL's you will be pulled over and at a minimum warned or either get a ticket for improper lighting or impersonating an emergency vehicle. With Blue lights that are only allowable by law enforcement you are pushing for minimum warning, up to improper lighting or impersonating law enforcement. Purple could be considered same as blue since blue and red blend to make purple and you see a lot of "purple" lighting here. They recently encorporated Green as a utility color so you have to have a permit or show you are a public utility to run green lighting. They are very touchy about distracted drivers here in michgan for lighting. You drive with your offroad lighting on you can get ticketed for improper lighting. I know of people with roof lighting that have gotten tickets for uncovered lights... Just depends on the area and when you are driving. They MOSTLY use it for a reason to check you in case you are drunk. But there are certainly some prick cops as well. We have had a problem with police impersonators at times here too so they will most definetly pull you over. Michigan law states no more than 2 forward facing headlights lit and nothing other than white or amber front facing. Nothing other than red or amber for rear facing.

Again, they use these more than anything for checking to make sure you are not driving high or drunk. But I know people that have also had tickets for running headlights any color other than white/slightly yellow.

Yea they outlawed things light under car lighting etc here a long time ago. If its visiable and doesn't match the state laws there are cops that will pull you over. Especially between the hours of 10pm-4am.

And yes, they have had people get into accidents because of peoples off-color lighting and is why they like to enforce the light code tightly. Although right now its almost like mad max.. Police are not pulling people over for hardly anything at the moment due to the virus. No cop wants to possibly expose themselves to the virus.

If interesting. Local LEO are operating under something called "Highway enforcement" which is mainly stops for speeding (suddenly anyone can speed on I-4) particularly DUI.

Meanwhile back at the Florida statutes: 316.2397 Certain lights prohibited;
"A person may not drive or move or cause to be moved any vehicle or equipment upon any highway within this state with any lamp or device thereon showing or displaying a red, red and white, or blue light visible from directly in front thereof except for certain vehicles provided in this section".
So not just flashing lights . I learn something every day.

Remind me not to ever move to Michigan. In Texas we definitely have our share of a55hole cops, but I never got harassed in a years time with my red DRL’s. Something tells me if I had any red lights showing after dark(obviously I wouldn’t with DRL’s) I’d get pulled over very quickly. Hence the colored headlights Rod was talking about, and why they F with people about that. Lemme just say this, any dumb ass cop that F’s with someone that OBVIOUSLY isn’t drunk, driving erratically, or just plain breaking any other laws, is just an flat out a55hole for effin with people over stupid crap! Just like 99% of them.

The biggest problem I have had with led hid bulbs on this car is that they seem to hear up and die fast in that sealed enclosure. I have switched to a low wattage HID bulb at 6k and they seem to work well. They are bright and it seems to give people pause before pulling directly out in front of me. I like the look.

the headlight bulbs or the DRLs?

Nice write-up. What did you do about the crack housing?
It's weird, it's only cracked inside the headlight, no exterior damage. I have no idea how it happened, wondering if it's been like that since I bought it. Headlights still function 100% so I'm not planning on doing anything right now.

Of course you don't have any moisture problems.. You have a large drain for the water to drain out...
Sorry.... Had to... :)

Are the turn signals and DRL's the same type bulb just different colors?
I have a DRL out and would like to upgrade both sides to LED but I prefer the yellow for turn signals and white for DRL. But then again I also want to get my light bar brighter and run it in parallel with the DRL.

Thanks... Looking around they seem to be either 12272 bulbs which I have seen listed as for our cars in this:

But stuff I have bought fromo iJDMTOY sucked before. Poor quality.

However in their listing it says this:

2008-2010 Saturn Outlook

Please note that when you are first starting your car's engine, the LED bulbs will faintly strobe or flash a few times due to the onboard computer scan which is completely normal.

** end of amazon advertisement.
From this I am assuming 7014 and PH24WY bulbs would also work.

Those bulbs my work in your/our turn signals but I assure you, they will hyper flash. Believe me I’ve done everything in my power to try and get that VERY last LED bulb in my cars. I was going to put a resistor in but couldn’t for the life of me find the right wire. There are 4 wires unlike the normal 2 wires going to the turn signal. Not sure why there’s 4, but I did try the resistor on all of them. No bueno! Why Cadillac left the 1 incandescent bulb on the whole car we will never know. If anyone ever figures that out PA-LEEEEEZE lemme know!
DRL 5201 5202 100% sure on that
I just got some new DRL bulbs for my new CTS with 3800 Lumens and thats the brightest I’ve found in years. Amazon

So Mr JAMMGM, if I were to attempt(AGAIN) to put an LED bulb in my turn signal, these are the wires I’d put the resistor on? I tried desperately a couple of years ago to do it, and believe me, although it hyperflashed, the LED turn signal looked amazing! No delay in flashing whatsoever. So cool! If you or anyone knows the exact wire to put that resistor on please let me know!

that's what I've always heard it was called...the light on the front fender of many European (and others) cars that repeats with the turn signal...

my 2015 SS sedan (Australian made) has them...

This schematic was from the alldatadiy subscription for my 2013 CTS Luxury.
I've found the schematics to be very good because they show the colors of the wires and how many harnesses the paths go through. This helped me troubleshoot and fix some broken speaker wires for the driver's side rear speaker so you can look at the wiring on the turn signal bulbs and compare to the schematics.

Mr CTS_Kenny, I honestly don't know and will have to look at this some more.
Normally, a resistor is placed in series with an LED and assume that's what you tried with no success.
I know that using LED's for turn signals is problematic but don't exactly understand why from an electrical characteristic perspective.
I did some more digging in alldatadiy and found what the repeater lamp is..
581227

This is the right side view... #1 is the turn signal bulb and #7 is the repeater lamp for that side. I have seen on some older caddy's where turning on the blinker, the bulb called the repeater lamp here, lights up solid while the signal lamp blinks.
I dont recall seeing the repeater lamp on my CTS. The wiring from the BCM (body control module is a straight connection to both bulbs, then the other side of each is just grounded.
I'll keep digging...
