My '08 SRX has been chewing through rear wheel bearings (mostly it's the speed sensors that are going) but the fronts were original until last week when my daughter started getting stability/traction/etc. service messages on the IP. I ordered a new part from RockAuto. I have had good experience with Timken and RockAuto spec'ed HA590078. After I installed the new hub and mounted the wheel, I noticed that the hub's bolts were short by a good 1/4". At first, I was worried that the lug nuts wouldn't have enough threads to ensure a secure hold. So I tapped out the bolts from the old hub with the intention of swapping them into the new hub. On further examination, I noticed that Timken has saved metal (and weight) by eliminating the unthreaded tip of the lug bolt (see picture). I am okay with this but was surprised - this is the first time I've seen this set-up.

Just sharing.

Not unusual. There unthreaded portion just helps prevent cross threading. Any car guy worth his weight should be starting by hand anyway before hitting it with the impact so it couldn't be a problem. So the threads are as long as the OEM?

I agree that it's not a problem given that the threaded length is identical between the OEM and replacement parts. Still, the OEM alloy wheels are reasonably thick and there is maybe 3/8" of thread contact between the stud and the lug - but it has always been like that but the unthreaded portion hid that fact. I used some blue loctite and have been checking the lug torque settings every few days.

Yesterday, I replaced the other front wheel bearing with the same Timken model. This time, the bearing's speed sensor was still working well enough to not throw any codes but the bearing itself was sounding awful and getting worse. I took the car for a spin afterwards and noted improved handling. This was the last original bearing left on the car and, while it was still operating, it was not good. I am kicking myself for not replacing both front bearings at the same time back in October.

Anyway, all is good now and these bearings are significantly easier to replace than those on my '10 CTS.

You mention there speed sensor. We're you getting any messages about the stability system? I get an occasional message and a couple times the stability system has been engaged, but even when it's still displayed,I get no codes at all.

No messages on the instrument panel or codes when I connected my OBD2 scanner. Mine is a Blue Driver which can read ABS and related codes whereas many OBD scan tools can only read engine codes.
