Hey gang; I've read all the posts related to PS issues, and I've narrowed it down to my pump needing replacing. 4.6 V8 AWD

Never replaced a pump before.

I've got one on order from Rock Auto. What tools are needed besides basic hand tools to do this job? Also, am I correct that I only need to move the steering side to side several times to bleed the system once the job is done?

You might need the power steering pulley removal tool part #27031 for rent at AutoZone for $30. Have both front wheels.off the ground slowly go lock to lock to bleed the air out. You are on the right track. I believe the bolts are 13 or 15mm and the pressure line should be a 16mm wrench if I remember correctly. That's the 3.6 engine though but should be similar although not 100% never actually had the new 4.6 in front of me it's always the 3.6 I'm working on.

Watch out for the Autozone puller. I just replaced a 4.6 ps pump and that tool tore the pulley apart. Had to get a new one.

Remove the PS reservoir and put it aside.
Use a ratchet pry bar to release tension on the belt, and remove it
Carefully remove the pulley so that you can get at the bolts that hold the pump to the block. GM has a special tool to get his pulley off
The high pressure line to the steering rack at the bottom of the pump uses a one time only snap connection. Your new pump should come with a new one to replace your old one. Careful when you take the pump out. Disconnecting the high pressure line is tricky. You may need a new line to insure a tight fit.
The bracket attached to the pump comes off last and gets reused on the new pump.

Stay cool. It's and SRX. Nothing is easy. :)

So I managed to start this job today...............

Thanks for the tips so far.

RE: the high pressure fitting coming out of the bottom of the pump. How do I disconnect this? I'm thinking a crows foot, but don't have one. Any other suggestions?

No wrench- from the SM-
Important: DO NOT try to remove the power steering pump nut from the power steering pressure hose. The power steering pump nut is a quick-connect fitting and once the power steering pressure hose is installed, the quick-connect fitting cannot be removed. If a new power steering pressure hose is required for further repairs, then a new power steering pump nut will be required.

Funny, I didnt see that written in the SM. :/

Got the job finished a hour ago. It was all together more difficult than I thought.

I ended up removing the pump hardware first and with the flex in the line, and still attached, moved it to a location I could get a good wrench on.

I disconnected the threaded portion of the pump fitting from the old one, and used it on the new pump with a new o-ring around the flare where the line terminates.. So the quick connect stayed intact.

No one said these vehicles were easy to work on ;)

How long should it take someone to replace the whole power steering pump and line? It's for a 2008 Cadillac cts
