Removing Onstar

2459 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  sts96
My friend just bought a '99 sts.
It has a onstar phone in the console.
He wants to take out of the Onstar equipment.
Are there any issues that need to be addressed, or can all of the equipment just be removed?
Thanks for any advise.

The computer will need reprograming to remove the factory phone messages on the display. best to have a caddy shop do this as the computer can be ruined by wrong input. other wise just unplug and remove the phone modules. sts96.
Re: Removing On star

Any idea where the on star equipment is?
The handset is in the console, and a mic above the windshield.
I would assume the phone is somehow attached to the sound system but don't know where.
Thanks for any help.

I would think you can just unplug the Onstar equipment (there are a couple of modules). When I had mine unhooked I didn't get any strange messages, but I don't have the phone either. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the boxes are mounted on a rack behind the back seat. In some later model cars they combined the boxes (the satellite receiver and the vehicle integration module) into one unit and mounted it on the package shelf, but I think in '99 it would still be 2 boxes 'strapped' together with a mounting bracket.

Look next to the power antenna or follow the celluar antenna lead to the module. If oem the steering wheel switches can be reprogrammed. sts96
