bought this OEM unit

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=260409671330

now i want to install it, i know their are several things i need to do:

get codes from dealer, wiring kit for antenna...

anything else i need to know?

called my local dealer in alhambra ca and they said it cant be done - which i told them i read online that it could be done...

need to get all the info i need to know to be able to take it back to them...if anyone knows someone who has done it or knows how to do it please reply...even better if you know a place in so cal that does it...that woudl be the best case scenario..

Thanks!

Been done a hundred times by members on this forum. I did mine right after I first bought my car in early '04.

The dealer won't do it because the wiring isn't installed on a car that didn't have a nav from the factory. You have to splice a VSS wire to a terminal on the nav harness, and that's it. Full voice commands and audible directions are another story, and more complicated. Those instructions are also on the FAQ.

Also, there are no 'codes' from the dealer. After the install, if the VIN has not already been cleared by who you bought it from (most likely), you'll need to take your car to the dealer and pay to have him clear the VIN in the Nav. it takes all of 10 minutes, mostly to hook up the Tech2 and put it away. They may charge between $50 and $100 for this service, and you likely will need to show some kind of receipt that shows you bought the nav from a legitimate vendor. (the whole point of VIN coding is to prevent theft).

if you didn't install a GPS antenna, the nav will show you're in Los Angeles and won't ever move. If you did, but don't have a VSS wire installed (it may be prewired in an 06) the symptom would be it will show your actual location (will take at least 6 minutes the first time you turn it on), but will not move with the car and will stay stationary, rotating when you turn. If that's the case, you'll need to pull the nav, and splice a VSS wire per the instructions.

Let us know if it works fine, as some have stated that the VSS wire to the radio was pre-installed on later cars, whether or not the Nav was factory installed. Would be great confirmation.

went to dealer this AM - Bewley Allen in Alhambra, CA - they acted like clearing the theftlock was teh hardest thing in teh world to do, kinda frowned on teh install of the nav unit but they did it - they were backed up so it took them an hour or so - but they charged me $159! ripoff! but anyways, now i have to do everythign else!

here are the closest i found to the harnesses online

Metra equivalent?

i get where to splice into the instrument panel, im unclear what i need to do with the VW harness (do i plug the whole thing into my new unit?) i know i need to connect the VSS splice to the harness but what after that?

please excuse my igorance fellas - just need to do 3 thigns for this system and all your help is appreciated:

splice the VSS (need most help for this)
install GPS antenna
get the OEM woodgrain veneer aftermarket or trade someone a faceplate (stock oem woodgrain 06 cts)

Clearing the VIN is actually a 60 second operation, once the car is in the bay, the Tech2 is hooked up to the OBD2 port under the steering wheel. Yes, it's a rip-off, but they know you can only go to someone with a Tech2 programmer (GM dealers).

As far as the harness, it's really a single wire that you need to splice into the harness going to the instrument cluster. One must be very careful not to cut the VSS wire going to the speedometer when you do the splice, as then that won't work! When you buy the reverse VW harness from Schosche, it's simply to get a single wire with the terminal attached. It just happens to use the same terminal that our cars do for that connector. You splice this to some longer wire. When Miscreant did his writeup he spliced a yellow wire on one end to a red wire on the other, which causes confusion for those trying to follow the instructions. I purchased a bunch of raw terminals when I did mine (minimum buy of 100), so I slice them to the proper length of brown 22AWG wire, and offer them to forum members.

I don't sell the harnesses, but for supporting members of this forum, I will mail one, free of charge. It's my way of making sure Sal has plenty of support to keep this forum going. It's value cannot be measured in dollars! I have no affiliation with the site, other than I've been a supporting and contributing member for about 5 years. Just my way of helping out.

So donate some $$$ to the forum, PM me your mailing address, and I'll make one up and send it out.

I just recently purchased a 2004 Cadillac CTS Base model. I've been a cadillac owner for years now but I drifted to a 05 Chevy Avalanche which I've owned for the last 4 yrs, anyways I bought this CTS and I wish I would of bought it sooner. It has the stock OEM Radio and I'm upgrading to OEM the NAV/CD/Radio and I seen your the man when it comes to these nav harness. I clicked on that link and I paid my respects to this forum, I'll do what I can to contribute. Shoot me an email at [email protected] so I can give you my address if you still have any extra harness, I'm still new to this forum so I dont know how to PM you with that information, I tried to find the buttom or method but I couldn't so this was my ONLY avenue. Any hoot, hope to hear from you soon and thanks in advance my friend.
