Removal or bypass Cats

7923 Views 14 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  randycsvt
recently I have had some issues with the Cats on my 06 CTSV (LS2). I have had the cats replaced once (under warranty, thank god).

Has any one bypassed/removed the catalytic converters?

If so how did you get around triggering the idiot lights?

I realize there are pre & aft sensors; more particularly the aft sensor, can it tricked or replaced so the computer thinks the cats are still running efficiently.

Granted this may fail any future emission testing standards; but this would be a track only application...maybe.

Four years ago when I first started on this forum, guys were talking about Random Technology cats and their hi-flo characteristics. You'd have to do a search on here to find out more.
You can get the codes tuned out so they don't show up, which will let you pass emissions. They only do sniff tests (in PA at least) on cars that are '95 or older - newer cars just have the computer checked via the OBDII port.

You still run into the problem of a visual inspection, where they will likely fail you if they don't see cats, or something that looks like cats.

I say just get a set of long tube headers and high flow cats and a tune and be done with it.
I had a problem with my cats too. I had a shop simply hollow out the stock ones and re-install them. I pick the car up today as the maggie is FINALLY done. I'll let you k nwo how it works.
Yeah you can remove the "aft" sensors with a tune. in IL they don't hook you up to the tubes (sniff test) or even look under your car.. unless you fail the ODBII...

So your looking for bolt in "off road" cat deletes for a LS2.... Did I read that right?

There is also a way that you won't have to pay for the new cats, or a full tune. You can just hollow out your stock cats, and call random technology up and order what they call "o2 signal conditioners." These will make your computer think your cats are working even though they are not even there.

Oh yeah. I ran O2 spoofers on my GTP... I agree they work like a champ! cheap, and then you don't "have" to get a tune... although it wouldn't be a horrible idea anyways since your freeing up the backpressure on the motor by taking the cats out...

The signal conditioners for this car from Random Tech are also only $60 cheaper then a full tune from Jessie (W4M).
All wonderful suggestions... Thanks

Info in another thread I just posted about RT replacement cats:

I got a website called trubendz.com to make me a set of test pipes. Maybe you can contact them and have them make you a set too.

Here are some pics so you can get an idea of what they looked like. I got a W4M tune to get rid of the O2 light. I tried the trick where you drill out a spark plug non fouler and install it on the O2 sensor (it pulls the sensor out of the exhaust stream), but that only worked for a few weeks.

Wasn't that the company Skull-V was working with to get some hi-flow cats fabbed up? Don't remember what ever came of that...

I actually set it up. Skull-V let me borrow his stock cats so that they could fabricate the pipes. I test fitted them.

They should be able to make a new set for anybody interested. We never got around to setting up a group buy, and I never saw them list it on their website.

They were SUPPOSED to send me a free set of the test pipes, maybe I will send them an email and see what ever happened to those.
trubendz.com makes a good product, but my few dealings with them have been short of perfect. It is really hard to get a hold of them and they can take a while to ship. I would suggest that anybody contacting them to buy test pipes pay with a credit card so you can get your money back if the deal goes bad.

I must say that they take good care of you if something is wrong. I bought an exhaust kit with a tip welded on off center and they sent me a check to cover the cost of having it welded back in place right. No hassle or questions asked. They are good guys in my book as long as you can deal with waiting a bit for your item to arrive.
