Re: Sail panels

So if I am looking at those right it looks like the bolt behind the airbag clip is one of the best places to start? Not trying to be silly just want to fix it right the first time and not keep messing with it.

Re: Sail panels

So it took some work and some calm breathing at times but I got it fixed! Used some long screw/bolts and some very rigid plastic and rubber washers and so far holding strong! They had been Jerry rigged by the previous owner which was kind of a funny job with what was used but all good now!

Broken interior sail panels fix?

Hello,

Is there a "how to" to remove the panels that the rear seat belts go through? Looks like both of mine have broken clips or something and I wanted to fix them.

Re: Broken interior sail panels fix?

From memory...there is a screw/bolt and I believe the rest just clips in there. My driver side broke and I fixed it with bondo/fiber glass and reinforced it with a metal washer. From memory, the bolt hole in the sail panel is very fragile.

If you're not skilled with bondo/fiber glass, I suggest a little practice and use plastic gloves. Wrap the fabric to protect it so you don't contaminate it with resin. It took me about an entire weekend but that was building it up and grinding it down with a dremel, drying times etc.

If you remove the airbag plastic clip the bolt is behind there. I had to grab a big plastic washer and hard plastic washer and a longer screw! Be patient and breathe a lot. It is not fun but once you fix it it is much better!

After hearing about this for 8-1/2 years, I just noticed my passenger side sail panel is also broken loose. :banghead:

Would a dab of epoxy on the base of that standoff (where the head of the screw apparently broke away) prevent proper airbag deployment?

I'm not sure if it would hold the air bag back, but that's what I did. My standoff had two pieces broken off of it, but I was able to find them and epoxy everything back together. Another thin layer of epoxy all around and it was good to go. Since then I've made the mistake of multiple 130+ sprints with the rear windows down and I haven't had a problem.

Did you remove the sail panel entirely to accomplish that?
Yes, they need to be removed entirely to accomplish this. I got mine out, it's pretty easy. You just have to remove the head rests and there's only one snap near the seat on the sail panel and remove the screw under the air bag plug. I didn't need to remove the air bag plug because mine was broken.

I actually didn't! I just pulled out some slack in the seat belt and worked on it just where it was. It wasn't the easiest way to work, but it sure beats take the whole seatbelt out.

Reading that again, I'm not sure what you meant by removed completely. I did completely unclip the sail panel, but I worked with the seat belt left in place.

Ok, got mine all fixed and back together. I made the fiber glass tight around the screw so it would hold the screw in the sail panel. Then when I put the sail panel in the car it was a snap to screw it into the car and didn’t have to worry about a magnetic nut driver and or losing the screw. It went right in like it had eyes.
