Rear interior sail panel / C-pillar trim panel fix?

41460 Views 74 Replies 53 Participants Last post by  zezee3
In the back seats, the trim panels on the D pillars, the ones with the Airbag logo on them... my driverside one just decides its gonna let go at the top and start flappin in the breeze. So I take it into the dealer and they say they need to order a part.

So I get home and on a whim check the other side, and it feels pretty dang loose too, though its not detached at the top like the driver's side is. (yet)

Anyone else have this problem? Is this common?

Re: Broken interior sail panels fix?

If you remove the airbag plastic clip the bolt is behind there. I had to grab a big plastic washer and hard plastic washer and a longer screw! Be patient and breathe a lot. It is not fun but once you fix it it is much better!

Did you remove the sail panel entirely to accomplish that?
Yes, they need to be removed entirely to accomplish this. I got mine out, it's pretty easy. You just have to remove the head rests and there's only one snap near the seat on the sail panel and remove the screw under the air bag plug. I didn't need to remove the air bag plug because mine was broken.

I actually didn't! I just pulled out some slack in the seat belt and worked on it just where it was. It wasn't the easiest way to work, but it sure beats take the whole seatbelt out.

Reading that again, I'm not sure what you meant by removed completely. I did completely unclip the sail panel, but I worked with the seat belt left in place.
You just unbolt the seatbelt at the floor and it slides through the sail panel. Much easier!
Re: Broken interior sail panels fix?

I used a longer screw and a giant metal washer. Air bag be damned.
Rear Interior Panel Clips

Hey guys, has anyone else ran into this problem? On both the passenger and drivers side the clips that hold these panels in are broken, the plastic piece that is underneath is all cracked. If anyone else has gone through this can you point me in the right direction to get replacement parts? I believe the dealer tried to sell me the entire panel, hopefully I don't need to go down that route.

Re: Rear Interior Panel Clips

The problem there and why people break them is they are not clips. I broke one also before I realized that there is a 7 or 8mm hex screw that holds them in behind that little Air Bag piece. Even though the plastic was fractured I was able to use a couple washers and a screw to re-attach it. If there is nothing left to the face of the plastic where the screw goes through you'll have to improvise something which won't be easy. I did my other side correctly after figuring that out...
Re: Rear Interior Panel Clips

I fixed mine with a large washer and a new screw. That little cover that says air bag comes off, and the screw is under there.
Re: Rear Interior Panel Clips

Search for "sail panel" and you'll find lots of discussion of that particular issue. Mine haven't done that (knock on wood), but lots of other folks have had to do the fix.

What he said.

I broke mine on purpose because those panels would squeak and rattle like crazy and drive me NUTS. So I busted them all apart, and then applied the washer method to re-attach. Worked like a charm...and quiet as a mouse.
Re: Driver side rear / interior sail panel

Just fixed mine with a large flat, panel washer I bummed from an engineer in my building, you can get them singly at Lowes. I pulled off the Air Bag badge, mine came off easily and seemingly intact. I used a long (18") socket extension with a 7mm socket to remove the bolt. I dropped my bolt but it got hung up in the panel and was easy to retrieve. Use caution when handling this bolt, mine had black sticky crap on it so I had to be careful not to get that on my tan fabric. I pulled the sail panel out a bit and fed the socket extension through the hole left by the Air Bag badge. I carefully positioned the 7mm bolt with the washer in the appropriate position and screwed it back into place, using caution when it became snug, I didn't want to over tighten and break what I just fixed. I popped the Air Bag badge back into place and my panel looks great. I feel confident that the air bag will still deploy properly, I just hope I never find out. I literally fixed it 15 minutes ago, during lunch at work, so I haven't driven at high speeds with the windows down or anything but it feels pretty snug, we'll see what happens. I called my dealership to see about a warranty replacement but, with my car being 9 years old, I was out of luck. I called a couple of salvage yards but had no luck there either. I've had my 05 CTS for 2 years and just put up with that stupid thing hanging down. Thanks for the inspiration to really look at it and formulate a solution. Hope this helps someone else and gives them the same sense of satisfaction that I now have. I also changed my spark plugs last night, wow what a difference, but that's another thread.

Re: Loose interior trim panels on D pillars

A little thread revival here...

Does anyone know what size bolts/screws hold the panels on? Mine are missing the screws completely so, I am going to have to find a replacement.

Just completed the sail panel fix. Thanks to members on this forum to give me insight as to the issue. Plastic bracket broke and sail panel was loose.

I fixed with this

I did not have to do anything to the bracket. The screw with built in washer was a perfect fit. I purchased it at lowes for about $1.50.

It was tricky getting it lined up and I thought I would drop it down (where the original screw now lives) so I started it with my fingers...not easy but doable.

Once it was started I was able then manipulate the sail panel and broken bracket in place. The washer tightens it all down and was big enough to catch the remainder of the plastic bracket. Took about 10 min.

That's exacty what i have been doing to mine. Except i use a little longer screw than the original with a washer on it. But that screw you found would be perfect. I also use a 1/4" deep well socket with a 6" extension. I then put a magnet on the extension to hold the screw in the socket til i get it started. Keeping a steady hand is the key. Kinda like playing the operation game.

Re: Loose interior trim panels on D pillars

If it's not loose, and the plastic is actually broken, have them replace both... it's a pain because the seat belt has to come out. They are called 'sail panels' btw.
Thank you so much.

Sail panels.....I posted this awhile ago. I think everyone said use a washer in between the panel and the clip so they dont break as easy. I've been too lazy to fix em, but plan to get on it soon.
Thank you .

Thank you
So much for your help.
