I was driving on the highway and made a left turn into a gas station and my car stopped and all I heard was a grinding sound, call a tow mechanic and he listen to it an said he thinks it is a broken left rear cv joint. It a 2010 CTS, with 118078 miles on it has anyone had this issue and if so what did it cost to fix?

How did the car stop, abruptly, or did it just lose forward power and the engine freewheel with a kind of high frequency (not crunching) grinding like noise from the rear of the car? The CV axle may have just snapped out of its seat in the differential as one member here experienced a short while ago after spinning his wheels on a slippery road, affecting the same side. Sounds like the Tow man looked under the car and listened.

Don't guess at this one, have someone get under the car and look, it may be an easy fix. You can probably see both axles at their insertion point into the differential from the rear of the car if you kneel down low enough, if you can, look for excessive space on one side between the joint and the differential by comparing both sides.

More detail about the car would be helpful also, particularly drivetrain specifics, awd, manual/auto.

Hey Joseph, it stopped abruptly, it gave no signal, when I slowed down from 40 mph to make a left turn, I pushed on the gas pedal and nothing. I pushed it to the side of the rode and when I tried to put it in any gear I get the grinding noise. Yes the tow driver listen to it when hit pit it on the lift. It is a 2010 CTS RWD with auto and manual for sports mode. I currently have it at a shop waiting for them to look at it on Thursday. Im going by the shop now to take a look at it since it was dark when this all took place.

Sorry, haven't looked here for a few days. Here was my experience with the CV Axle popping out of the diff. This was very obvious in looking under the car - clear gap between the axle and the diff. I haven't had any issue since elegantly popping it back in with a sledgehammer! I can't recommend repairing yours the same way but that is how I corrected the problem on mine without removing the hub.
