RDS…Non-existent

RDS…Non-existent

I have a 2004 CTS with the base radio W/ XM. My 2003 Impala would scroll the radio station title, name of song, name of artist, etc. My CTS doesn’t. I went through the menu and went to “RDS MESSAGE” and pressed the tune button and nothing happens. It says “no info” on the screen. Am I missing something?:alchi:

On XM it's not RDS data you are looking for.
You won't get RDS info for XM... you have to use the "info" button and the tuner knob, it's a real pain I know but the base radio systems on CTS won't display track info unless you do it manually.

Re: RDS…Non-existent

Two things...

1.(Im afraid it is simple) What is DIC? Ugh! I know Im going to look stupid asking this one.

2. How do I get the RDS to work on the FM stations? It pops up for 1 sec when I turn on a new station then goes away. One of the stations pops up the word "DRINK"...weird huh? But get this, one of the stations I listen to pops up "KENNY G". And no no no no I do not listen to KENNY G. In fact it is like a talk radio station. Any ideas how to get the RDS to work on FM?

I wish that was the case. My Impala that I just sold got RDS info on tons of stations. Plus why does it only show up for one sec and go back to the clock?

This is an often complained about issue. The problem lies in the fact that the base radio can only display one line of RDS information and many stations will display artist, song, album, and radio call letters or slogan on multiple lines. The radio will pick one, flash it on screen, then see the rest of the data, freak out and go back to the clock. Or, because of multiple inputs the radio will display something completely random and off topic like your Kenny G experience without any reasonable explanation for that one.

There's only one fix, switch to a DVD Navigation system, then you'll get everything and will never get lost again. :)

DIC is the Driver Information Center above the radio. It's used a lot, and don't be embarassed about asking, we're all here to learn and share.

Re: RDS…Non-existent

That makes sense. Too bad Cadillac didn’t think that one through. I would love to put the navigation in my car someday. Does anyone know if and where there is a good write up on adding one? I would only consider it if it looked stock and I didn’t lose any functionality. My radio/DIC does a lot more than play music.

Thank you all so much for your help. I’ve owned a lot of cars and by the time I sell them I always am pretty knowledgeable on them. Starting over is always rough. I’ll catch up soon. Hopefully someday I can be a resource to others.

Odysseus has an easy to follow guide for swapping from radio to navigation at www.cadillacfaq.com

Most people use the factory DVD nav head unit which simply replaces the radio and DIC and preserves all the functionality. Integrating a third party GPS Nav or radio system while preserving all the DIC functions can be done, but it's not for the unskilled. Since the DIC provides a lot of important functionality, preserving it is important in any upgrades, which is why the factory nav swap is so popular.
