Radio on driving to work, suddenly a loud pop from the back seat area and stereo went dead, antenna went down. Display shows dashes across. No clock, no radio frequency. There is power though because when I touch a button then a radio frequency shows up but goes back to a display of dashes after I quit touching buttons. No CD, no cassette, no sound, no nothing.

So I buy a used head unit and plug it in. Exactly the same symptoms. No change at all. When I power up the unit, no antenna, no sound, nothing but dashes.

Could it be one of the amps? If so where do I start? Where exactly are the amps located. If they are mounted on the back seat back, are they on the trunk side or the inside.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. The more specific the better since I am a little new to electronics but not new to mechanical issues.

Thanks

In either case (Bose or non-Bose) - there's a remote tuner module in the trunk, behind the power antenna on a bracket. Remove and check the wiring going to it. With stock wiring, head unit is useless without this. Power to antenna is part of this harness. Because if the location (near the antenna) check for any possible water damage to the harness or the remote tuner unit itself. I'd start there. You might be able to get that module from the same place you got the head unit. If it were Bose, you might want to try unplugging both speaker-mounted amps (in case there was a short that needs to be cleared to test the fronts). Chances are, that pop came from that remote tuner module.

BTW, I almost forgot. I believe the antenna and "radio" are on separate mini fuses in the trunk.

Warspite, thanks alot. Yes, this is a Bose gold series unit. Sorry I forgot that information.

I will check the tuner module. You mentioned speaker mounted amps. Where exactly are those located? There is so much behind the rear seat I don't know what I'm looking for.

Can you tell me about where the mini fuses are located and what color they are? Man these electronics drive me crazy.

if you have a power antenna then you have amps mounted on each speaker.... instead of one big amp.
take the rear carpet in the trunk down and you should see the amps on the speakers (if you have a power antenna)
the fuse block will be on the back of the rear seat on the drivers side.

Warspite, you were dead on with your diagnosis. Bad tuner module. I went to a salvage yard today and pulled one. Replaced my unit with the salvage unit and everything works great! Thank you. I really appreciate the help offered here.

Glad to help, STSsmoothie! Nice to hear about "plug and play" instead of "plug and pray!". Nice to hear about another '95 that's still going strong!

Enjoy!

I'm having the same problem, just curious..... The module wouldn't happen to be a silver rectangular box would it? I've already tried everything else I could find for troubleshooting this problem and none of it has worked up to this point

Is the only module mounted on the same bracket with the antenna.
