I'm behind the curve on this. I leave Wednesday on a 1400 road trip and my detector has died. I'll have to look locally.
Radarbusters says you get what you pay for. They have many reasons for getting the high-end versions but my wallet hurts just thinking about spending that much money. Check out the performance/buying tips.

What works for you guys?

I used to use a CB radio in my TurboCoupe. It worked better than a radar detector IMO. I just can't bring myself to hacking on the Caddy's wiring to install it.

Can't you wire up a cigarette lighter adapter? Run a temporary magnet-mount antenna?

I'm not sure how helpful the CB is anymore. The nice thing about the radar detector is you run at a more constant speed and only slow down when it goes off.

When I used a CB I found that I would do 85 then 55, then 85 again, then 55.

When I switched to a radar detector I locked in around 70 and rarely came off it. I could quickly drop down to 62 and avoid a ticket.

Today with the speed limits at 70-75 in a lot of places I don't see much need in going any faster. 80 is more than enough and they probably won't write you up for that.

I set the cruise at posted limit +10mph and have never had any problems....when I'm feeling cowardly I drop down to +8

Radarbusters is right....you get what you pay for. I use the Escort Passport 8500 X50 which retails for $299. It's arguably one of the 2 best on the market and is $100 cheaper than the Valentine V1.

Without a radar detector I believe your eyes are your best weapon (during the day of course). Watch traffic patterns and stay with the flow of traffic. As said above I will try to keep my speed at, or just under 10 mph over the posted limit.

Oh, they are fine and dandy until the day you find out the hard way that your state troupers have upgraded beyond your detector's capabilities!! :banghead: :thepan: :stirpot: :yup:

If I get caught and banned so be it.

My own fault. I just dont get caught.

I don't use anything like that. Living on an island makes it easy to just become friends with the WHOLE police force, and I didn't need any of that nice product one post above this one. They'll flash their headlights at me as a warning, but I've never gotten a ticket.

I use the Escort Solo S2. It's basically the cordless version of the Passport 8500 X50, but with a little nicer display. I went with the cordless option because the closest 12V accesory outlet is all the way down near the floor on the passenger side of the console. I've only ever had one ticket, and that was when the batteries died on me (it was my own fault for being too lazy to change them). They do have a Smart Cord that you can get for it as well, that has a mute button built into it an power the unit as well.

I want one. They are a bit pricy though, but I know that there would be times that I would be really glad I had it. It must be fun for a cop to stop you and see that you've got a radar detector in your car, knowing that it is obsolete or whatever.

As a matter of fact, the last time I had one in my car the officer that pulled me over did have an amused, smug smirk on his face when he asked; "Didn't your detector go off for you?"

That's when I decided that I would be better off without one, staying within 8 miles over the limit at most with some exceptions here and there.

For me it's better not to have one, otherwise I might take it as an excuse to exceed the legal speed limit! :tisk: :cop:
