im going to buy a lower pulley, cai and exhaust for my car.

my question is has anyone done a direct comparison of a handheld tune and an in-person dyno tune? i know dyno tuning is the way to go, but what is the real and possibly gain?

im relatively confident I can install the stuff myself and it sure would be nice to avoid driving across country to have the car tuned.

Agree. I've had both done. I used W4M's handheld at first, which worked fine for me. However, I ultimately made the 3.5-hour drive to his place for proper dyno tuning to bring out as much power as (safely) possible.

The hand held tune usually gets you to a place where you can drive the car okay. In doing so, it has to be conservative in nature because the car is not present. Important things like the efficiency of the engine and it's supporting components affect the tune quite a bit as do altitude where the car will be driven. While the objective may not be to wring every last HP out of your motor, it you want to have the benefits of tuning the only way to tune is on a dyno using without a wide band, data logging of key PID's such as IAT, MAF Hz, gms/cly, timing, ETC%, IDC, RPM and much more. A pullied car could easily leave 30 HP on the table with a hand held tune. Or there could just be places in the curve where timing it too low causing dips in torque and affecting mileage. Things will lack in each tuning category. That's just the facts. Some are closer than others but each car, fuel and where it's driven is different. Hand held tunes are cookie cutter.
IMO, a hand held tune is not even a tune. It's more like a SWAG. Kyle told me it's like having sex with fat chick. Fun until your friends find out.
