I was low on gas on my way home from work so I decided to put a few gallons of race fuel in. The car had about 3 gallons of 93 in it and I pumped a little more than 3 gallons of 100 in (stuff is expensive $6.99 a gallon).

The car definitely runs better with the 100 in it, I swear there's less vibration in the engine. The only down side to the 100 is a strange odor. At first I thought I might have something on my hands or feet. Is the different smell normal with race gas?

OK, I went to VIR for the Grand Am race in early October and asked the Sunoco people how they were getting the high octane number and was told that the race fuel they were using had lead in it (tetraethyl.....somethingorother). If that's true then your cats are toast and thus the smell.

By the way, never use 100 octane aviation fuel, because it definitely has lead in it.

The 100 octane GT fuel you get at the Sunoco pump doesn't have lead in it, but it does have an alcohol-like smell. I believe they make unleaded GT fuel up to 104 octane. I had a guy in a Camaro pull up next to me one day and say "I knew there was something bad ass up here - I've been smelling the fuel for miles".

I run 100 octane GT fuel in the GN exclusively - it's "only" $5.50 around here. It does smell nice, especially when you mix some denatured alcohol in with it. At the track I put their 110 or 114 in it - that stuff has lead but I don't have a cat. The lead wipes out the O2 sensors too.

I didn't think it had lead in it but I'm glad you know for sure. I did look at the pump and I figured I'd see a warning sticker or something saying it has lead in it.

The guy in the store had to turn the pump on for me, and he goes (I'm not kidding) did you just pull that Regal up to that pump? :thepan: I'm thinking to myself, did he just call the V a Regal? :hmm: (not that there's antyhing wrong with a Regal, I use to drive a 3800SC GS)

Geno, you scared the crap out of me.

We used to run Cam2 in our sport quads purely for that smell!

Most of your high octane is gonna smell real good. Is it C16 that smells like grape popsicles? I burn 101 every now and then, and I used to think it was expensive 'til I saw what you guys are paying.

I'm definately li'l pimpin', cos that $4/gallon for 101 is high in my opinion.
