I recently bought a used '03 CTS and I have already encountered several problems going on with it.

The check engine light is on. I took it to AutoZone to see what could be going on..and they referred me to an auto repair shop.

One thing is an oil leak inside the hood. There's kinda dried up oil on the engine and other parts around. How can I go about fixing this? Or around how much would it cost to take it to get fixed?

Also, the thermostat needs to be changed and I don't have the money to take it to a mechanic. Can anybody give me step-by-step DIY instructions (w/pics if possible)?

Sounds like you need some upgrades. The PCV gets clogged and builds pressure under the valve covers till it pops the gaskets and they leak oil. I got new covers with gaskets and replaced mine for $ 130, install the new PCV kit at the same time. total for the fix is $200 DIY. you have to have some mechanical knowledge, it's not hard, just a lot of work.

The T-stat and housing is a $35 part but 8 hours of labor. Dealer wants about $600 to do the job. It's also a lot of work, the intake manifold has to come off.

Do a search on the thermostat or the p0128 code and you should find some info.

if you want to know what your engine codes are put your key in turn on(dont start car) push and hold F1 and F6 on your radio.
your screen will act a little funnt light up and go solid for a secone then it will show you a bunch of modules. the ones with a * have a code.
using the tuning knob select the module, push to open. read and write down the codes. you can also clear them.

PITA is the 03 that i have wont link with either of my 2 handheald OBD2 scanners.......no idea why because ive used them both on a 2006 CTS but im assuming because its already linked to the deck.
