After looking for a little while, and test driving many Honda Accords, Oldsmobile Ninety Eights, and a few Buick Park Avenues, I have found a car that I will probably purchase tomorrow. :)

It is a 1992 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Regency Elite with 164,700 miles. On top of the standard features of the Regency Elite, it has a lot of options. Off the top of my head, I know it has leather, dual zone A/C, twilight sentinel, the DIGITAL DASH (very cool) and it has the aluminum wheels. It's a Medium Blue two tone paint with a platinum lower half and dark blue leather.

The car is not perfect, and for $1200 it should not be. The paint is a little faded in some places, and the front passengers side fender has a bit of damage due to the owner sliding into a snowbank. But the car is rust free.
The motor is in good condition, it runs smooth and drives nice, the tranny is good too. It's a decently quick car, more powerful than my dad's 3.1 Lumina. Overall, It doesn't feel like it has 164k miles.

But for $1200, the car will need some work. First off, it needs two new hood struts, new brake calipers (the left one sticks). And it will need a new catalytic converter later because the one it has now is rattling inside. The steering column is a bit loose, so it will need 4 new bolts. And the car leaks a bit of oil around the intake manifold, not a lot, but just a bit. I could put a new gasket on I suppose. Those are the biggest problems we found.
The car is missing two buttons on the steering wheel, and there is a hole in one of the buttons on the dashboard. It also needs the engine cover that says "3800 Tuned Port Injection" that broke off halfway. And for some odd reason, the motor is pretty loud, it's like it has an exhaust leak, but I can't smell any exhaust when in the car.

The interior of the car is quite nice, but not perfect. The leather is dark blue and is in pretty good condition. It has some cracks on the passengers seat, but nothing major, the drivers seat is in good condition, and the back seat is in really good shape. The dashboard is in good shape, and thank god the digital dash works well. The Driver Information Center works very well and thats probably my favorite feature, along with the 3800 V6! The carpeting is a little dirty, but a good detailing will fix that, and it has all 4 carpeted floor mats that say Oldsmobile on the front ones. The headliner is in good condition, but it's hanging a bit on the C pillars, oh well it's only $1200.

The nice thing about this car is it's not in the best condition, so I won't have to baby it or be overly concerned about it, but it's still nice enough where I will like it a lot. This drivetrain should prove to be very reliable, because the 3800 is arguably one of the best V6s ever. This is going to be a car that will be economical, reliable, luxurious, cheap to get into, and it should last me through college.

Tomorrow, I am going to talk to the dealer that offered to buy my car last week for $1500 and sell it to him, and if he does that, then I will buy the Ninety Eight!

Let me know what you think!

Hopefully, more pics will come later!

Ugly looking thing :)

First year for the all new style... its a good chassis... updated over the 1985-1991.

First off, it needs two new hood struts,
Ah yes, my Oldsmobile came equiped with a strategicly cut piece of boarder trim wood that served a 2nd life as a hood prop :)

Then when I bought 2 new hood struts for the '93 DeVille, I put the old DeVille struts on the Olds.... works like a charm :) They are $25 each and have a life time warrantee and a whole 5mins to swap out.

new brake calipers (the left one sticks)
eh, that sucks.... The brake system will need to be bled and stuff.... well, really isn't that big of a deal... in fact I would get 2 new calipers in the front, new rotors and pads in the front and new drums and shoes for the back... since you'll have the car for awhile, it would be nice to have all new brakes, plus they will have a life time warrantee.

If it is anything like my Olds... parts are CHEAP.

front pads were $30 for all 4 (both wheels) the rotors were $20 each, the rear drums were $30 each and the shoes were also $30 for both wheels. For less then $150 total I had all new brakes on my car (since I did it myself...easy) they all have lifetime warrantee, and the safety factor is easily worth that price alone.

And it will need a new catalytic converter later because the one it has now is rattling inside.
Check your states emmission laws, if there are none for that year car, dump the cat all together. The cat on the '93 Coupe was broken inside causing crappy milage, stalling, ran rough etc... bad stuff... the new cat was like $75 and we did it ourself.

The steering column is a bit loose, so it will need 4 new bolts.
nope, dosn't need 4 *new* bolts, it needs the bolts tightened... this is a PITA, and especially if you have air bag..... plus you gotta have a couple special steering wheel tools. I did it myself and said I would never do it again, but now that I did, it isn't *that* bad.... really though, bring it to the dealer and give them the $100 in labor it would be and save yourself the hassle. The steering wheel will not break off, but it will get soo loose, it'll be very unsafe, then if column shift, it'll jump out of park when in park (not good) and you'll have ignition problems.

And the car leaks a bit of oil around the intake manifold, not a lot, but just a bit.
This is one of those things were you say.... who gives a crap. lol, oil is cheap, if you gotta top it off once every 1-2 weeks, who cares... otherwise replace the lower intake manifold gasket.

The car is missing two buttons on the steering wheel, and there is a hole in one of the buttons on the dashboard. It also needs the engine cover that says "3800 Tuned Port Injection" that broke off halfway. And for some odd reason, the motor is pretty loud, it's like it has an exhaust leak, but I can't smell any exhaust when in the car.
buttons you can find on ebay or junkyard.... thats cool that it has that tho :)

engine cover.... you mean the plastic clip on thing? lol... hardly need to worry about that thing, it serves no purpose but to make the engine look pretty... atleast on the Series II it actually quieted down the injectors, but on the Series I, it just makes it look nice.

Very possible it can have an exhaust leak and you don't smell anything... both of my DeVille's have an exhaust leak and you don't smell anything, exhaust leaks are easy to spot (sound) though.

All in all, it sounds like a perfectly normal 14 year old car! :) In fact compared to what *my* Oldsmobile needed just 2 years ago, you have it pretty easy.... I think once you get these little hiccups fixed, you'll have many years of trouble-free driving pleasure.

If it is anything like my Oldsmobile/3800....it is just going to be a sweet car to own and drive, amazing on gas, super reliable, cheap parts and very easy to work on.

I'd say go for it! this car would fit you so much more then a crummy old Honda :)

Rick... excellent writeup...

8792... I think youd have alot more fun tooling on that car than the Honda, you seem to be pretty excited about it... Good luck!

Oh yeah... the fact that you will own/drive an Oldsmobile... even if its an ugly duckling ('92 Ninety Eight) or a bland product of GM's multi-brand badge engineering (my '89 Eighty Eight) there is this love for Olds that only Oldsmobile owners understand....

kinda like the Jeep thing with CJ/Wrangler owners.... or the Harley thing....

you may not wave to all other Oldsmobile drivers... but you'll take notice... and you'll despise of people that do not care for their Oldsmobile as the car deserves.

Treat the Oldsmobile nice, it will treat you better in return :)

I wanna welcome you to the family... but you are not there yet... close though... can ya taste it? its close.....

Hey, yeah, Oldsmobile......rock on... oooo my soul.....

Got that song stuck in my head.... made it my MySpace song, and now it has Olds in it :)

The Niney Eight was an excellent car, I think you'll love it.
I miss my Oldsmobile.
I had a '92 Cutlass Supreme that was Garnet Red and had the DOHC motor in it.
That was a really nice automobile, but it's hard to fit a car seat for a baby in it.... :(
I like my Trailblazer but it's not as much fun to drive as my Olds was.
I sold it to a girl down in LA who has been slowly killing the car ever since.

See you knew what it was like to be in the Oldsmobile family.... :( Shoulda got a Bravada if you wanted an SUV :)

Ah well... whats the news on the 98?

Rick, I love that song! Rock On By David Essex. I love that part when he goes "Jimmy Dean" and the guy with the deep voice says "James Dean"

I worked for Chevy at the time and couldn't buy the Olds as cheap as I did my Chevy. I actually would have preferred the Olds but I couldn't find one.
This one I ordered from the factory and got a great deal on it.

My folks bought a new Aurora, that's a sweet car. It's white. My Mom LOVES that car. I am actually an Olds tech, but I migrated to Cadillac because I didn't want to stay with Chevy. Long story.

I wouldn't worry about 164K, you might have to spend a little money on the car but as long as everything works, it's worth it.

Yup, it all checks out. I had my uncle who was a mechanic at a Chevy dealership for 10 years look at it, and he said it was a good buy for $1200! :D

I'm just waiting for the dealer who wants to buy my car to call me back!
I plan on going down there with my father, selling the car to him, and then going to the bank to get cash, and go buy that Ninety Eight!

Thanks again for all the info and advice!
Hopefully, I'll go to bed tonight owning an Oldsmobile!

Shit!
The dealer who wanted to purchase my car just bought 5 cars this morning, so now his lot is full, and he can't buy my car. :banghead:

I called around to some other dealers to see if any of them wanted it, and none of them did. :annoyed:

I found one dealer not too far from here that was considering it, but I think he wanted me to trade it in on another '92 Ninety Eight Regency Elite that he had with 159k miles for $2700!!!!:banghead:

I may just end up hanging on to my Caddy:bonkers:
Maybe this is a sign that I should not sell and buy something else!:hmm:

Well, I suppose I could have that one dealer appraise my car, and see if possibly he'll buy it, but I have to do some homework today!
This is the sort of thing where I have to work quickly to get my car sold, and I can't wait around at all!:helpless:

Yeah maybe I'll find a really nice 91-93 Ninety Eight Touring Sedan (my favorite oldsmobile, and 3800 powered car ever) for a good price! :)
