Pricing?

A major car mag says base price $75k, that can't possibly be the price for the entry level four banger could it?

It could be but Im guessing that price is for the top of line model . Sort of like the 7 series BMW listing for 130K . In BMWs case divide the cylinder count by2 and the price drops to 60 something IIRC .

Many things in USA are valued because they are expensive, stating a high price spells quality and luxury .
Sort of off topic but its My opinion professional atheletes are paid huge sums of money because no one wants to see a ball player who's worth 60 grand a year .:)

The S Class starts at 94.4, the audi is the only one close to the price range everyone is quoting at 77. The complaint I keep hearing is that caddy raised its prices, so I'll cross shop to that other brand I looked at 3 years ago, but no one is considering that other brand raised its price too.

Its not hard to figure out just by using ATS as an example. If ATS is having a hard time what makes you think CT6 wont? At the end of the day its probably going to take a generation to build the brand back up to compete with the German rivals, and to do so you need to slowly get there by creating quality products that offer value to the competition. Once you are even and critics/consumers alike are mentioning you in the same sentences with the top dogs then you can have higher prices. Its long-term plays with too much competition out there.

"Defection analysis at KBB.com shows Cadillac owners abandoning the brand for non-luxury nameplates, and most are going to mid-size sedans or compact crossovers. This further suggests a pricing issue for Cadillac (read: it’s too high), "

Cadillac is producing cars on par with Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, etc.. now. Virtually every automotive journal/journalist backs that up (including your cited article).

Although I personally believe that GM should have continued to undercut their luxury competitors a while longer, pricing is not the problem. The challenge facing GM/Cadillac now is public perception. Regardless of how great Cadillacs are, they don't have the prestige of their Euro competitors. Yet.

Like I said, Cadillac has come a long ways in 10+ years, and it will only continue to get better.

Never say never. ;)

I agree with your entire post . Personally Ive experianced the image problem associated with Cadillac, my 30 year old daughter comments while flogging my DTS." I love this car,its an old mans car and cops dont look at it " Yeah but radar and visual observation does notice your catching up to "left lane bandits " .

Another instance a new friend commented " why do you drive an old mans car " ? "Ah well it has 4 cams 32valves and cruise's economically at low triple digits speeds "
I didnt need to mention the advantages over the 3 series BMW "putt putt" favored by this ignorant observer. One ride in the DTS made its advantages obvious to the point of comment " This is much nicer than my BMW "
Fact remains Cadillac does have an image problem . The 2 above examples prove it .

Your idea that Cadillac should undercut the competition by price is also with merit . Until Cadillac is percieved a better value than its competition it will continue to sit on the lot .

Always? Do you have a crystal ball? Cadillac has come a long ways in the last 10+ years. Don't be so quick to dismiss.
The last 10 years has been remarkable for Cadillac to totally reinvent themselves and attempt to capture what they once had. Cadillac is a car company with 114 years of American history and arguably represents one of the strongest images of the rewards that come with "American prosperity"... I say shame on any American who doesn't shop a Cadillac first when looking for their next luxury car.

I wouldn't go quite that far - you like them or you don't - but I think Cadillac does deserve real credit for launching its obviously sincere attack on reclaiming its position as one of the acknowledged top luxury cars in the world.

I hear you and of course that was a little " tongue in cheek".

I'm not one to want to compliment the Germans but in Germany today as well as 100 years ago the average German first will shop and usually buy from a " Made in Germany " company. Americans need a little more of that attitude when spending money and things would be better for everyone ..

Not just them. The Japanese and Koreans too. This country overall has an obsession with being foreign thou. But me I always shop american first especially with cars to me cars represent pride. I like german cars specifically audi only german brand I would buy if I had to go foreign. But I feel special when I ride down the street in my clean cadillac. Like a feeling like yea my ppl made this even thou I know today's economy and manufacturing is global. I just can't feel That same pride in a foreign car made ( the country who gets the credit) by people that I have zero relation too and don't even speak the language

I know you were half-kidding, but for many of us buying American whenever possible is a priority. About 5 years ago I was considering moving up the ladder to a luxury performance vehicle. All I knew about at that time was BMW, Merc, etc... when by chance/luck, I had the opportunity to test drive a CTS V at a Barrett Jackson auction. I was so impressed, that 3 months later I bought my first my first V and have been enamored ever since! Go U.S.A.!!
Great story !! I think when more people go test drive one of the new Caddys they will see that they are building an amazing product.

Go USA indeed :).

Personally, I look for the best of what's out there. It's why I've driven Town Cars for work all these years. And why I owned an SHO. And an Accord when value and resale was a priority.

Cadillac is my favorite brand now because they are the best value and best driver's car. If it weren't, I'd buy foreign without thinking about it.

Well said and " Kudos"!!! Thankfully , now the styling and quality of a Cadillac is world class.

Not sure what you're point is exactly.

If Cadillac continued to undercut the competition more people would buy Cadillacs. If more people bought Cadillacs there would be more Cadillacs on the streets. More drivers spread the word of quality and prestige/cachet attach. With increased prestige/cachet Cadillac raises prices in line with the competition.

During this whole process sales volumes increase.

Simple logic.

Here is the problem I think. You can have 2 of the following three, but only 2.
Lower pricing
Best performance/luxury materials
Best service/customer experience

In the previous gen 2 CTS, they gave a little on lux to cut the price. And then you can read in the V forums about how the leather was not as nice as the benz or the headliner was not as nice etc.
So in gen 3 it looks like the up'ed the quality with more premium materials and caddy is pushing its dealers to bump the service level. So price is up
to levels nearly the same as the competition. I am assuming the CT6 will take the materials up yet another notch, and they continue to
push customer service. I know my dealer remodeled in the past couple of years and they seem to have even more porters hanging around.

So I think caddy has decided to go back to its roots and let price be what it has to be to be the best car/service level. I'm ok with it. If
that means I can't afford a caddy in the future, I'll live. But you cannot be the standard of the world and be cheap, especially when you
are not in a low cost labor country. Frankly I see bmw/benz cheapening their brands by coming out with the 1/A class cars. How'd that work out for jag?
