I have a 1995 deVille 4.9L with 112 kmiles.

I read that the timing belt should be replaced preventatively at 100,000 miles. Would you indeed suggest doing this?

Also I read that the PCV valve should be replaced preventatively every 30,000 miles. Again, would you concur on this?

thanks so much.

The choice is yours really. If your Deville is running smooth,it could be said "leave well enough alone" as far as the timing belt is concerned. The timing belt replacement is pricey.Definitely change the pcv valve--cheap fix.
I also have a '95 Deville,4.9 liter with 128,000 miles----purrs like a kitten with original timing belt.I recently had a complete tune-up done though---everything including new plugs and wires.
If it makes you feel good to replace timing belt and you have the $$$ to throw at it---go for it.

The only thing recommended in my FSM to change on my 4.9L at 100K miles is the spark plugs. The timing chain is inside the engine - major engine work to replace unless it's broke. Nothing in the manual to indicate it should be replaced as routine PM. The "Serpentine" is the rubber Accessory Drive Belt on the outside for Generator, Power Steering etc. and needs only an inspection every 30K. Replace only if it has cracks and excessive wear marks.

I'm curious where you got your info, tho. :hmm: Maybe I'm wrong about this. My ride has 141K and is still in it's youth according to some Caddy lovers.

Between the five 4.9 Devilles we have now, they have well over half a million miles combined, and all of them are on the original timing belt.

If you can afford to have your car not running at times, it's much better for your blood pressure to just fix things as they come along. No sense in doing work changing a part that's still good.

I have a 94 deville with 130k and it runs great on the highway getting about 28mpg and 18mpg in the city but at idle it runs rough, i replaced the plugs and wires, i also checked out the distributer and its good. I also have to add octane to my fuel otherwise it will ping very bad. I dont know what the problem is, im thinking i might have skipped a notch in the timing chain, anyone know?

clean the egr tubes inside the throttle body, and check your timing.
I have never had a timing chain problem with these cars but i would think if it jumped you would have much more serious symptoms then just a ping.

Just a thought - BAD GAS. Sounds simply like a very fuelish problem, - water in your gas maybe? Try adding a pint of 99% Isopropyl alcohol (NOT the 70% rubbing type) to your gas.It will absorb 3 times it's weight in water, will boost your octane a slight notch and best of all, it's cheap. Also, same thing in product called "Heet". I had to do that when Ethanol became law because ethanol absorbs water if not stored properly. My 84 Lincoln Towncar ran like doodoo until the gas stations figured out how to handle the stuff properly.

I can pull 28 all day long in my 92, seriously, as long as its flat and level, tires at 35psi, and cruise set between 60 & 62...and thats with the AC on....now at my usual 72-78 I sits at about 22~23....which still aint to bad for such a big car with a v8

Most of our cars get the rated 26mpg when cruising at 60mph, and around 17-18mpg in the city.

Our daily driver can pull off over 30mph at 55mph, and over 20 in the city, but that's because it pretty much has no exhaust :p

I know most people dont believe me, but i just drive about 72mph and i look at the instant mpg and it fluctuates between 30 and 25mpg. Its crazy i went on a trip when i first go the car and the range said 601 miles after i filled up. It really is amazing how a v8 can get that good of mileage.
