Hey guys I have a 2006 STS V8 rear wheel drive and my windows only work when the car is an accessory mode. Also my driver's window works when it wants to I hear the motor going but the window stays in place. Has anybody else had these issues?

If you can hear the motor running, but the glass is not moving up or down, the regulator is likely broken and needs to be replaced. As to why they will only work when the car is in ACCY mode, that's very odd. I can't recall ever hearing someone else make that claim. If the battery is disconnected, the express up/down function will need to be relearned, but that's really the most common window issue.

It is really unusual that if your car is running you can't operate the power windows, but in ACCY you can. This could be a somewhat complex problem. There is a module in the vehicle that acts as a power mode master (for the STS, it's the Instrument Panel Module). This is what tells all the other modules by way of the high and low speed data bus whether the car is Off-Awake/Accessory/Run/Crank. It almost sounds as though the window switch module (known as the Driver Door Switch Assembly or DDSA) isn't recognizing the correct mode and therefore, not sending a signal to the applicable door module to operate the window. The window switch module is not just switches, it's actually a computer module that connects to the low speed GMLAN bus. It will behave based on whether it sees the window lockout button is active (for windows other than the driver's) and will not permit window operation in certain power modes.

There are a few possibilities. I'm not sure where I'd start without a scan tool. Because it works in ACCY mode, there is some functionality. I would want to verify what power mode the DDSA believes is active.

Are there any other odd or unusual problems with the vehicle? Are there any aftermarket electronics installed?

thanks for the reply. other strange things going on are 1)front passenger door only opens from inside but once in a blue moon it will function properly. 2) my bose stereo amp does not work but the headunit does. the screen is not very responsive. it seems like it needs to be calibrated.if i try to go to the config mode on radio it says an error. 3)my passenger front amber signal lite does not work. even with new bulb.
