I have a 2006 STS-V, but I believe this information would be applicable to all current STS models.

I would like to be able to mount my radar detector on the windshield somewhere just below the rear view mirror, but have it powered from above. Currently I have the power cord running down to the power plug (lighter) in the change drawer (ash tray). This gets in the way of the nav screen and the other controls unless I shut the cord in the glovebox which is not ideal.

My question is this: Does anyone know if there is sufficient power to tap into in the overhead console where the lights and sunroof controls are so I could run my radar detector from there? Also, if there is something I can tap into, how do I open that console to access the wires and which wires to tap into (power and ground)?

I'm an electrical engineer guy, so I don't mind splicing wires, but I want to get the right ones. I don't want to screw up my Cadillac!

Any help would be appreciated!

I have k-40 installed in my V. A little different being a hideaway unit, but still is powered by 12v. I just ran a wire to my fuse box, connected wire to an ATC Pigtail Fuse, used multimeter to determine which open socket turned on/off with car, and simply plugged in fuse. Best part about this is that there is a fuse that can pop if there are any issues plus a single wire is very easy to run and hide. Doing it that way will also eliminate any potential issues from tapping off the power source from something else (i.e., turn on your dome lights and your radar reboots. My friend had this issue with his fog lights. I thought it was quite humorous). The cigarette lighter adapter usually has a fuse inside of it. You can use this to determine what size ATC fuse to use.

I think this is what you are looking for. I got this off the board last year.

Go to the reading lite console cover and pull down with a thin blade screwdriver. Has 6 metal clips that hold it on. I used the switched 12v that supplies power to the 2 reading lites. There is a 3 wire plug that powers both lites. The hot wire is a green wire with a white stripe on it. The ground wire is black. Tapped into those two. Power is turned off after 10 minutes each time you leave the car. Easy to do. My radar detector is mounted in the upper left corner of windshield, front side of visor at a slant. Works great.
You wont be able to mount below mirror where the rain sensors are, it wont stick.

Food For Thought!!!. My trusted V1 that worked perfectly in my '96 vette got me two tickets quickly, because it was not working properly because of interference from all the communications stuff (ie., blue tooth, onstar, etc.). I called V1 and they verified that it was a known problem. I bought a remote unit (fits in the grill) to get around this problem. Don't know if it will be a problem for you, but if you're detector is not defending you as expected; remember this issue.

I called V1 and they verified that it was a known problem. I bought a remote unit (fits in the grill) to get around this problem. Don't know if it will be a problem for you, but if you're detector is not defending you as expected; remember this issue.

Thanks for the advice. I do have a V1 as well. It seems to be working OK for me so far.

What kind of remote unit do you have? Is this something that works with your V1 or another type of unit?

I bought an Escort SR7 with shifters (eg. laser jammer). It has protected me perfectly thus far. Also, I couldn't mount my V1, because of the state I live in. If your V1s are working properly, maybe they fixed the problem. I would call them and inquire just to make sure. They did acknowledge a problem when I called a little less than a year ago.

Now, THAT is the system that I really want! Pretty costly, though. How does the installation look? I'd love to see pictures of the senors, senders and the inside control panel if you wouldn't mind showing me.
